Most snacks have too much processing and contain refined sugars, unnecessary salts, and unhealthy fats. These snacks offer little if any, nutritious value, and when ingested regularly, they may lead to weight gain and other health problems. “Knowing what to eat is one thing, but knowing how to eat it is another. And that is where planning is important, for meals and food shopping,” says Nadia San Onofre.

A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that 95% of the UK participants ate at least one snack a day, and almost one-quarter (24%) of participants’ daily energy intake came from snacks such as cereal bars, pastries, and fruit. A further 47% of people ate two snacks a day, and 29% had more than two. However, the researchers concluded that snacking is not unhealthy—as long as the snacks are nutritious.

A perennial favorite, Doritos Nacho Cheese chips are high in calories, sodium, and fat and offer little to no nutritional value. Twelve chips contain 150 calories and 8 grams of fat, but they offer only 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of fiber, which keeps you from feeling full and satisfied.

With 400 milligrams of sodium in a half-ounce serving, these ultra-salty pork skins rack up a large percentage of your daily recommended intake.
