How to Paint Air Dry Clay

This post may contain affiliate links.

Painting air dry clay is quite easy – and I am a big fan of working with air dry clay. Air dry clay is non-toxic, doesn’t require a kiln or oven to cure, and is soft and easy to shape right out of the package. It’s a fun material that’s also safe for kids to use.

Air dry clay is an excellent choice for modeling clay activities with kids. We’ve made all sorts of projects with it from wavy-edge dishes, Faux Plant Pot to Coasters and so much more. We’ve even tried making homemade air dry clay from scratch—it’s that fun and flexible.

One of our favorite parts of working with air dry clay is adding color. Painting your finished pieces gives them personality and style; experimenting with different paint colors and techniques is half the fun.

That said, painting air dry clay does take a little know-how to get the best results. So we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you paint your air dry clay projects beautifully.

What You Will Need

  • Air Dry Clay – I like to use
  • Acrylic Paint or Watercolor
  • Paintbrushes
  • Palette or Mixing Surface
  • Sealer
  • Water Container
  • Cloth or Paper Towels

Painting Air Dry Clay

1. Make Sure Your Air Dry Clay is Completely Dry

Before you begin painting your air dry clay project, you have to make sure it is completely dry. Drying newly molded clay can take about 24-48 hours. I prefer to give it 48 hours to ensure the perfect amount of drying.

Checking that it’s dry reduces the risk of paint bubbling or peeling off as it adheres to a moisture-filled surface.

2. Clean and Smooth Any Rough Edges

Gently wipe your clay piece with a damp cloth to remove any dust or residue. If there are some imperfections, use fine-grit sandpaper to lightly sand any rough edges or blemishes on your clay surface.

3. Decorating With Paint

Use your paint and paintbrush, as well as acrylic paint, and begin by applying a thin layer of paint to the surface using a suitable brush to cover the entire area evenly. When applying your base coat, strive for an even distribution of paint across the surface of your clay. Using smooth, consistent strokes will minimize the appearance of brush marks and ensure your base layer is smooth and uniform.

If you plan to make different designs, it’s best to use different-sized brushes. Having a variety of paintbrushes allows you to tackle different aspects of your painting, from broad coverage to fine details. Flat brushes are ideal for larger areas, while detail brushes help in intricate work.

Also, you can really experiment with colors, so get creative.

Allow the paint to dry for 1-2 hours, then, if necessary, apply additional coats to achieve the desired color and finish. I always like to give mine a second coat. Remember that some colors may require more layers than others to reach full opacity.

4. Seal the Paint

The final step involves applying a sealer to protect your work. This protective layer secures your paint from wear while providing additional polish to your clay piece.

A thin, even coat should give your piece a nice shine without altering the colors. Allow the sealant to dry for at least 2 to 3 hours. If you are using Mod Podge sealant, it only takes about an hour to seal correctly, as it dries pretty quickly.

Can I Paint Wet Air Dry Clay?

The simple answer is no. You should not paint air-dry clay before it dries. You should only paint on air-dry clay after it has dried. This ensures no excess moisture is introduced to the clay, which can cause deformities.

How to know if air dry clay is dry?

There are a few ways to tell if the clay is dry.

1. The best way to know if the clay is dry is to touch it. If the clay still feels cool, it’s not done drying. As it dries, moisture evaporates, and the piece will feel room temperature when fully dry. Try to gently press on the surface with a clean finger. It still needs more time if it feels soft or leaves an impression.

2. Another way is to check its color. Air-dry clay usually changes color slightly as it dries, typically from a darker to a lighter shade. Uniform lightness across the piece is a good sign that it’s dry throughout.

How long does air dry clay take to dry before painting?

Drying newly molded clay can take about 24-48 hours. However, drying time varies based on thickness, humidity, and air circulation. Thicker items can take several days or even a week. You will need to give it sufficient time to dry before painting.
