She Thought She Was Helping a Friend Until She Found Out Her Parking Spot Was Being Rented Out

A woman thought she was doing a friend a favor by letting her use an empty parking spot at her apartment building. She later discovered that her friend had been charging someone else to park there without asking her first.

The situation ended with the other person’s car being towed, leaving the woman and her friend arguing over who should have warned him.

A Parking Favor Turns Into a Paid Arrangement

In a Reddit post, the woman explained that her apartment building gives each unit one numbered parking space. Since she doesn’t own a car, her assigned spot usually sits empty.

When a friend who worked nearby asked if she could park there a few days a week, the woman agreed and handed over her garage fob. She said the arrangement was meant for her friend’s own car, not for anyone else to use.

A few weeks later, the building manager contacted her about an unfamiliar vehicle that had been parking in her space every day. When she asked her friend about it, the friend admitted she’d been letting a coworker use the spot and charging him $80 a month.

According to the woman, her friend didn’t think she’d done anything wrong because the space was sitting empty most of the time.

She Took Back the Parking Spot, and the Coworker’s Car Was Towed

After finding out about the paid arrangement, the woman asked her friend to return the garage fob. She also contacted building management to explain that neither her friend nor the coworker had permission to park in her assigned space anymore.

The coworker used the spot again the next day, and his car was towed. Her friend was angry, saying the woman should have given them a few days to find somewhere else for him to park.

The friend also claimed that her coworker hadn’t realized she didn’t own the parking space. The woman felt bad for him because he may have believed the arrangement was legitimate, but she didn’t think she should be responsible for a deal she never agreed to.

Commenters Questioned Who Should Pay for the Towing

Many Reddit commenters took issue with the friend’s decision to charge someone for a parking space she had been allowed to use for free. They pointed out that permission to park her own car didn’t give her the right to rent the space to a coworker.

Several people felt the friend should pay back the $80 monthly fees and cover the towing costs. Others sympathized with the coworker, who may have paid for parking in good faith and had no idea his car could be towed.

Some also raised a question about whether the friend had told the coworker that the arrangement was over. The post doesn’t clarify whether he was warned before returning to the space or whether the garage fob had been handed back by then.

The Parking Spot Was Empty, but It Wasn’t Hers to Rent Out

The disagreement came down to what the original favor actually allowed. The friend apparently saw an unused parking space as a chance to help a coworker and make some extra money, while the woman had agreed to let one particular person park there.

She hadn’t given permission for her friend to rent the spot to someone else or collect money from it. By the time she found out, the friend had already been paid, the coworker had come to rely on the space, and taking it back had left someone else dealing with the consequences.
