DIY Honeycomb Easter Egg

Easter is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a fun, hands-on craft to celebrate the season, we’ve got a really sweet idea for you! This DIY paper honeycomb Easter egg is colorful, creative, and such a cheerful way to welcome spring. All you need is a bit of construction paper and glue to turn simple shapes into a beautiful 3D egg that unfolds like a honeycomb.

I made these with my baby girls, and we had the best time folding, gluing, and watching the shape come to life. It’s the kind of craft that’s easy enough for kids to help with but still fun and satisfying for grown-ups, too. You can hang them in windows, dangle them from branches, or even use them as part of your Easter table centerpiece. However you display them, they’re sure to add a pop of joy to your springtime décor!

How to Make Honeycomb Easter Eggs

Step 1: Create Your Egg Templates

  1. Take the white cardstock paper and use a pencil to draw an egg shape on it.
  2. Cut out the egg shape carefully.
  3. Use this first egg as a template to trace and cut 9 total egg shapes from the white cardstock.
  4. Repeat this same process with the red construction paper, cutting out 9 red egg shapes using the same template.

You should now have 9 white eggs and 9 red eggs — a total of 18 cutouts.

Step 2: Begin Folding and Gluing the First Layers

  1. Take one white paper egg and fold it in half vertically, then unfold it.
  2. Apply small lines of craft glue in three places:
    • Along the top of the fold (crease)
    • Along the bottom of the fold
    • A horizontal line of glue across the center of the egg
  3. Refold the egg along the crease so the glued areas stick together. Press firmly.

Step 3: Begin Layering Red and White Eggs

  1. Take a red egg and fold it in half.
  2. Apply glue to the outer 1/3 edge on both sides of the folded white egg (the one already glued in Step 7).
  3. Press the folded red egg firmly against it, aligning the edges carefully.

Step 4: Alternate and Build the Honeycomb Shape

  1. Continue layering the eggs, alternating colors (white, red, white, red, etc.), repeating the gluing and folding process.
  2. Each time, fold the next egg in half, glue the edges of the previous egg, and press the new one into place.
  3. Once all 18 folded and glued egg halves are layered together, unfold the honeycomb shape by bringing the last egg around to meet the first.

Step 5: Seal the Spine and Add a Ribbon

  1. To seal the egg into a full 3D shape, apply a line of hot glue along the straight inside edge (the spine) of the egg.
  2. Use the warm tip of the glue gun to gently spread the glue so it holds the spine firmly in place.
  3. Repeat if needed until the spine is secure.
  4. Cut a length of ribbon and glue both ends to the inside spine using the hot glue. This will allow you to hang your honeycomb Easter egg as a decoration.
