If you’re in the mood for a relaxing, hands-on project that brings a touch of nature indoors, this DIY paper polka dot plant is just the thing. Inspired by the striking Begonia Maculata, known for its spotted leaves, and comes together with just some green paper, white paint, and floral wire.
I put this together during a quiet afternoon with my little one, and it was such a sweet, creative way to spend time together. Folding the paper, dotting the leaves, and shaping each one to look just like the real plant. It’s easy enough for kids to join in, but still fun for adults who enjoy getting crafty. Pop your finished leaves into a small vase or use them to brighten up a shelf—either way, this handmade plant adds a playful and botanical touch to any corner of your home.

How to Make Begonia Maculata Paper Leaves
1. Draw the Leaf Shapes
Start with your green cardstock. Use a pencil to draw two different leaf shapes — one more rounded and one more elongated, both inspired by the begonia maculata’s natural form.
You’ll need 3 of each shape, for a total of 6 leaves.

2. Cut Out the Leaves
Use scissors to carefully cut out each of the six leaf shapes.

3. Shape the Leaves
To give the leaves a more natural look:
- Slightly fold each leaf along the curve where a central vein would be.
- Use the back of a ballpoint stylus or similar rounded tool to gently press vein lines into the cardstock.
- Once the veins are marked, fold lightly along those lines to make them more visible and give texture.

4. Add the Polka Dots
Dip a small paintbrush or the tip of a stylus into white acrylic paint.
- Add polka dots of varying sizes to the top surface of each leaf.
- Space them out randomly to mimic the look of real begonia maculata leaves.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on.

5. Attach the Floral Wire Stems
Cut floral wire to your desired stem lengths.
- Slightly bend the top of each wire into a U-shape.
- Apply hot glue to the bent part of the wire and press it against the back side of each leaf (the side without polka dots).
- This creates the stem and adds support.

6. Cover the Wire Base
Cut a small square of green paper. Then glue this over the base of the wire on the back of the leaf to hide the glue and secure the stem.

7. Repeat for All Leaves
Repeat the stem and cover process for all six leaves.
8. Arrange and Display
Once all leaves are finished, arrange them together into a bouquet-like display.

Place the finished plant in your favorite vase for a beautiful, polka-dot botanical accent!
