DIY Gift Bag Using Wrapping Paper

Just like we turned old grocery store paper bags into beautiful paper leaves, we’re now taking it a step further by using wrapping paper to make gift bags. Yes, you heard that right—a gift bag!
If you’re anything like me, you probably stock up on wrapping paper during the holidays and end up with more than you actually need. Instead of letting that extra paper go to waste, letting it sit around, or tossing it out, why not repurpose it into gift bags?
These DIY gift bags are perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings, or any special occasion. This DIY project is not only easy to make at home but could cost you less than a dollar—or even nothing if you’re using paper you weren’t planning to use again. Here’s how you can get started!
Supplies
- patterned paper
- glue
- scissor
- fabric ribbon
Instructions
Step 1: Start by cutting a rectangle from your wrapping paper, measuring 29 x 21 centimeters. Fold it lengthwise, leaving a 1.5-centimeter edge free on one side.
Step 2: Apply glue along the 1.5-centimeter edge and secure it to the opposite side to form a tube.
Step 3: Next, fold up 5 cm from one of the open ends—this section will create the base of your gift bag.
Step 4: Open up the sides of this folded section, allowing the corners to form two triangular flaps on each side, along with two larger flaps at the top and bottom.
Step 5: Fold the top flap down to the center, aligning the edge with the middle crease at the bottom.
Step 6: Then, fold the bottom flap up, slightly overlapping the top flap. Secure it in place with glue to close off the base of your bag.
Step 7: You’ll see two square shapes on either side of the bag’s base—fold along these lines to create sharp, clean creases on the sides.
Step 8: Carefully unfold those creases and gently puff up the bag from the open end, allowing the side and bottom folds to expand and form the bag’s shape.
Step 9: Cut four small paper squares and two lengths of satin ribbon for the handles, making sure the ribbons are long enough to be comfortable to hold.
Step 10: Attach the ends of each ribbon inside the open edge of the bag, placing them in the center to create the handles.
Step 11: Secure the ribbon ends with the small paper squares, pressing them firmly to ensure the handles stay in place, and your gift bag is ready to use!
And that’s it. It’s amazing what we can create by recycling things we already have. I just love the results! Don’t You?
