The 2000s were a fantastic era for unique and beloved food and drink products. Many products that defined our childhoods, from school lunchbox staples to late-night snack cravings, are now just fond memories.
While some have reappeared on store shelves to much fanfare, others remain missing in action, leaving us to reminisce about their unforgettable flavors.
Dunkaroos
Who can forget Dunkaroos? These iconic cookies with dippable frosting were a lunchbox staple for ’90s and early 2000s kids. Discontinued in 2012 in the US, they made a triumphant return in 2020, much to fans’ delight.
The combination of crunchy cookies and sweet frosting was simply irresistible. Today, Dunkaroos are more than just a snack; they symbolize childhood joy.
Oreo Cakesters
Oreo Cakesters were a hit in the mid-2000s with their soft, cake-like texture. Unlike traditional Oreos, these had a unique, fluffy consistency that left fans craving more.
However, they disappeared without warning, leaving a void in our snack lineup. The good news? They came back in 2022 after going missing in 2012.
Keebler Munch ‘Ems
Combining the texture of chips with the flavor of crackers, Keebler Munch ‘Ems was a unique snack that vanished in the early 2000s. Their crunchy texture and savory flavors made them a favorite among snack enthusiasts.
If only these could return to satisfy our munchies once again.
Jell-O Pudding Pops
These frozen pudding treats were an after-school favorite for decades before being pulled from shelves around 2010 due to a lack of demand. Creamy and cool, Jell-O Pudding Pops were the perfect way to beat the heat and satisfy our sweet tooth.
Despite numerous campaigns for their return, they remain a cherished memory.
Hershey’s Bites
These poppable chocolate snacks came in various flavors like cookies n’ cream and Reese’s. Though they were delicious, Hershey’s Bites were pulled from shelves in 2007 due to choking hazard concerns. Despite the risks, many still remember and miss the convenience and taste of these bite-sized treats.
As per Hershey’s website, you can still purchase Hershey’s Cookie Bites, Pretzel Bites, and Cookies ‘N’ Creme Cookie Bites. While they might not satisfy your cravings for Kit Kats, Almond Joys, or Reese’s, they do provide a convenient and delicious poppable chocolate treat.
Haagen-Dazs Black Walnut Ice Cream
This rich ice cream flavor never gained enough traction and was discontinued in 2009, disappointing nut lovers everywhere. Black Walnut stood out in the Haagen-Dazs lineup due to its creamy texture and unique taste.
Perhaps one day, it will return to delight our taste buds again.
Rice Krispies Treats Cereal
This cereal version of the popular marshmallow treat is no longer available, much to the dismay of breakfast enthusiasts. In 2021, Kellogg’s wrote on X, “We’re sad to say the Rice Krispies Treats cereal has been discontinued.”
Combining the snap, crackle, and pop of Rice Krispies with the sweetness of marshmallows, it was a delightful start to any morning. Fans continue to lobby for its return.
Philadelphia Cheesecake Snack Bars
Available in flavors like strawberry cheesecake, these bars have been sorely missed since their discontinuation. My Urban Treats reached out to Kraft Marketing Director Basak Oguz to find out why they were discontinued, and he said, “Philadelphia Snack Bars were discontinued due to challenges within manufacturing capabilities.”
Perfect for a quick dessert or snack, they offered the rich taste of cheesecake without the need for a fork. They remain a top request among fans of discontinued snacks.
Altoids Sours
These tangy mints were a hit before their discontinuation in 2010 due to low sales. Altoids Sours offered an intense and refreshing burst of flavor. Despite their brief shelf life, they left a lasting impression on candy lovers everywhere.
Chicken Fries
These finger-shaped chicken strips were a popular fast-food item that was discontinued for a while. Burger King’s Chicken Fries offered a fun and convenient way to enjoy chicken on the go. Their return has been met with widespread enthusiasm.
Deep-fried McDonald’s Apple Pie
McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie was permanently removed from the regular menu due to “health concerns.” The original deep-fried version of McDonald’s apple pie is missed by many who prefer it to the baked version.
Crispy on the outside and filled with warm apple goodness, it was a beloved dessert option. The deep-fried pies remain a nostalgic favorite among fast-food lovers.
Wild Cherry Jell-O
Wild Cherry Jell-O was a bold flavor that stood out among the more traditional options. Its vibrant color and fruity taste were a hit at parties and family gatherings. Despite its discontinuation, it remains a fond memory for Jell-O enthusiasts.
Honey Bunches of Oats (Certain Varieties)
Some varieties of Honey Bunches of Oats have been discontinued, much to the dismay of cereal lovers. Each variety offered a unique blend of flavors and textures that made breakfast exciting. Many who grew up enjoying them are feeling the loss of these varieties.
Surprises in Cereal Boxes
It’s not a food item per se, but the disappearance of surprises in cereal boxes has left a void in the breakfast experience. These little toys and trinkets added an element of fun and anticipation to the morning routine.
Their absence is a reminder of a simpler, more playful time.
Butterfinger BB’s
These bite-sized versions of the classic Butterfinger bar were a hit before being discontinued in 2006. Their convenient size and familiar taste made them a favorite among candy lovers, and many still hope for their return to the candy aisle.
