During our 4 day trip to Cusco, my 4-year-old daughter and I took part in the Bean to Bar Workshop at ChocoMuseo, and it was easily one of the highlights of our visit.
This 2-hour hands-on experience walks you through the entire chocolate-making process—from cacao bean to finished bar—and offers a deep dive into chocolate’s fascinating year history.

What to Expect During the Workshop
The workshop is held at the ChocoMuseo, located in the heart of Cusco at Plaza Regocijo 216.
Led by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, the session was both fun and educational, and it was interactive. The instructor kept everyone, from solo travelers to couples and kids, engaged and entertained.
We began by learning about the ancient origins of cacao, which the Maya used as sacred offerings to the gods, and followed its journey through time.
The Chocolate-Making Process
Then came the hands-on portion! Our small group (which included a couple from Australia and a traveler from the UK) picked cacao beans, roasted them over the fire, peeled them, and ground them into a paste using traditional tools.

There were even mini-competitions along the way, which kept the mood light and fun.

Once we had our paste, we moved on to customizing our own chocolate bars. We chose between milk and dark chocolate and had over a dozen toppings to add, including nuts, spices, dried fruit, and more. My daughter loved making her own bar, and it was such a sweet bonding moment for the two of us.

After molding our chocolates, they were chilled for about an hour, and then they were ready to pick up and take home. We left with a generous stash of homemade chocolate and big smiles.

If you’re short on time, ChocoMuseo also offers a Mini Chocolate Workshop starting at $15. For those interested in more advanced techniques, there’s a Truffle Workshop, as well as classes in ganache making, cooking, and even coffee and Pisco tasting.
