During the month of December, we made a last-minute decision to go on an exciting trip to Peru with our 2-year-old and 4-year-old. While some friends thought we were a bit adventurous (or maybe a little insane!) for taking young kids on such a journey, our love for traveling as a family outweighed any hesitations. Our ultimate goal was Machu Picchu, but first, we explored the vibrant city of Lima.

Lima offered a rich blend of history, culture, and family-friendly activities. From the scenic Malecón to the artistic streets of Barranco to the Magic Water Circuit, Lima proved to be an ideal destination for families.

The city’s warm and welcoming atmosphere made it easy for us to enjoy this adventure with our little ones—and it was just the beginning of our unforgettable journey through Peru.

Here’s how we spent four days in Lima, Peru, with kids.

What You Need to Know When Traveling to Lima with Kids

When visiting Lima in December, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip with little ones. Here’s what we found essential for making the most of our 4-day adventure.

Packing for Lima’s December Weather

The weather in Lima during December is a bit unpredictable, with warm temperatures that can be accompanied by occasional rain. You’ll want to pack light, breathable clothing like dresses, t-shirts, and shorts to keep comfortable during the day.

However, don’t forget to bring a compact raincoat or a lightweight jacket—those sudden showers can catch you off guard, and a little extra layering can come in handy during breezy evenings.

If you’re planning on visiting places like Huaca Pucllana or exploring the Malecón, pack comfortable walking shoes. Many of the sites involve a fair amount of strolling, and you’ll want to keep both the kids and yourself comfortable while taking in the sights.

Navigating Lima: Transportation Tips

One of the best surprises about Lima was the ease and affordability of getting around. Uber is widely available and incredibly cheap, making it a convenient option for families.

Whether heading to historic landmarks, a food tour, or the bohemian streets of Barranco, Uber was a lifesaver for us. For families traveling with kids, it’s worth noting that car seats are not commonly provided, so if you prefer using one, plan to bring your own travel-friendly option.

Where to Stay in Lima with Kids

Choosing the right place to stay can make all the difference when traveling with kids, and Lima offers several family-friendly neighborhoods and hotels to consider. We stayed in Miraflores, a vibrant and safe area that’s perfect for families. Known for its parks, ocean views, and convenient access to attractions, Miraflores provides a welcoming environment with plenty to see and do.

Our stay at the Crowne Plaza Lima was a fantastic choice for traveling with young children. The hotel staff were incredibly accommodating, making sure our needs—and the kids’—were met with ease.

Each morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast with fresh fruits, refreshing drinks, and some of the best coffee we’ve ever had. A tip for travelers: Breakfast is not always included, so be sure to pay for it ahead of time when booking your package.

The room itself was ideal for our family. We had a spacious setup with three beds, which gave everyone plenty of room to sleep and relax after busy days exploring Lima.

The added space was a huge plus when traveling with little ones who need room to play or unwind. For families considering where to stay, Miraflores offers a combination of comfort, convenience, and kid-friendly amenities that make it hard to beat.

Kid Essentials to Keep in Mind

Traveling with young children requires a little extra planning, and we found the following items invaluable for our time in Lima:

  • Snacks and Water Bottles: The hustle of sightseeing can leave little ones hungry and thirsty quickly. While Lima offers incredible food, having snacks on hand saved the day more than once.
  • Portable Stroller or Baby Carrier: Depending on your child’s age, a stroller or carrier makes exploring sites like Plaza de Armas or the Magic Water Circuit much more manageable.
  • Sunscreen and Hats: Despite the possibility of rain, Lima’s sun can be strong. Protect little faces with sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats.

Day 1: Walk the Malecón

Our first day in Lima started with a leisurely stroll along the Malecón, the scenic cliffside promenade in Miraflores. The breathtaking ocean views provided a stunning backdrop to our walk, and the kids loved stopping at the playground and garden along the way.

The malecon was a great introduction to the city—relaxed, family-friendly, and a perfect blend of nature and urban charm.

After working up an appetite, we enjoyed lunch at a nearby restaurant called Delfino Mar Restaurante. The food was quite delicious and well worth the price tag.

That evening after the kid’s nap, we visited Parque Kennedy, known as “The Cat Park.” The park is home to over 100 stray cats, lounging in trees, bushes, and on benches, calmly coexisting with visitors.

Our kids absolutely loved it—they had so many cats to watch and even play with, along with plenty of open areas to run around. There’s also a small kiddie playground, which was a bonus for keeping them entertained. With so much going on, from the cats to the lively atmosphere and nearby vendors, it was a perfect spot for a family evening.

Day 2: Exploring Huaca Pucllana and a Food Tour

We kicked off Day 2 with a visit to Huaca Pucllana, an ancient pre-Inca pyramid right in the heart of Miraflores. This fascinating archaeological site, built around 400 CE, once served as an administrative and ceremonial center for the Lima culture.

It was inspiring to stand among such history, especially knowing the site predates iconic landmarks like Machu Picchu. While the kids grew a little restless and we didn’t finish the tour, the experience was still worth it. Pro tip: The ruins are especially magical at night when lit up, and the on-site restaurant offers incredible views of the illuminated pyramid.

In the evening, we dove into Lima’s culinary scene with a Street Food, Market & Old Eateries Tour booked via TripAdvisor. This tour was a perfect mix of culture and cuisine, allowing us to sample traditional Peruvian dishes while exploring Lima’s historic center.

Our guide introduced us to local delicacies, weaving history and food together seamlessly. We enjoyed expertly crafted Pisco Sour, sampled some incredible fruits, smoky, tender beef heart, and so much more. It was a delicious and educational experience that even the kids enjoyed.

Day 3: Artsy Barranco

Day 3 took us to the bohemian district of Barranco, known for its artistic vibe and colorful streets. We spent the morning wandering through galleries and boutique shops, soaking in the creative energy.

The kids had fun exploring the quirky murals and street art that adorn the area, and we indulged in some fantastic food at a local café. Barranco’s charm made it a highlight of our trip—a perfect mix of art, culture, and laid-back vibes.

Day 4: Plaza de Armas and the Magic Water Circuit

Our final day in Lima was packed with iconic sights. We began at the Plaza de Armas, the city’s main square, surrounded by grand historic buildings. We watched the changing of the guard ceremony at the Government Palace—a unique and entertaining experience for the whole family.

My kids thoroughly enjoyed the park at Plaza de Armas. The loved running and chasing after the pigeons.

We also visited La Catedral de Lima, a magnificent structure with a history dating back to 1535. Its stunning facade and intricate interior captivated us, and the kids were surprisingly engaged by the grandeur of it all.

To wrap up our trip, we headed to the Magic Water Circuit at dusk. This open-air park features colorful fountains that come alive at night with rainbow lights and musical water shows. Think of it as an amusement park without roller coasters and large rides.

Entry price was fairly cheap (though pricing varies on whether you are a resident or tourist), and the kids had an absolute blast running through the interactive fountains, sitting on the small train ride, bouncing in the bouncy houses while we soaked in the dazzling displays.

There was just so much for them to do. It was a magical way to end our Lima adventure—a moment of pure joy for the kids and a chance for us to reconnect with our own inner child.
