Buying a new house before selling the old one can put a family under a lot of pressure. One couple was feeling that pressure as they tried to sell their current home before school ended and it was time to move into the house they had already purchased.
Their goal was to get the old house under contract as soon as possible. The problem was that every time they walked through it, they spotted another project they felt they needed to finish first.

They Couldn’t Stop Finding Things to Fix
There was painting to do, small gaps in the flooring to address, baseboards that needed attention, and outdated light fixtures they wanted to replace.
None of these jobs seemed like a major undertaking on its own, but the growing list had become a source of stress. The couple kept delaying the listing date because they worried buyers wouldn’t like the house enough to pay the minimum price they had in mind.
Meanwhile, every extra week brought them closer to paying two mortgages at once. That expense could cost far more than leaving a few dated fixtures or unfinished cosmetic projects.

The Other Listings Weren’t Helping
Looking at nearby homes for sale made the couple even more hesitant. Many listings featured professionally staged rooms, fresh renovations, and recently flipped properties that looked magazine-ready.
Their own home looked like a place people actually lived in, and that comparison made it harder to feel comfortable listing it. Eventually, they turned to Reddit to ask other homeowners how much work a house really needs before it goes on the market.
Reddit Thought They Were Doing Too Much
Other homeowners shared some practical advice. Rather than spending money on every outdated feature, many recommended decluttering, putting away personal belongings, and thoroughly cleaning the house.
One commenter suggested packing away family photos and personal decorations, then deep-cleaning the rooms and getting good listing photos. Another recommended keeping a box nearby for everyday items that usually sit on bathroom and kitchen counters, making it easy to clear those surfaces before a showing.

Maybe the House Didn’t Need to Be Perfect
For these homeowners, the long list of repairs had become the main reason their house wasn’t selling. At some point, spending another weekend painting baseboards might matter less than getting the listing online and letting buyers see the property.
Would you finish every small project before putting your house on the market, or would you clean it up, set a reasonable price, and let the next owner decide what they want to update?
