Some inventions are remembered because they changed everyday life for the better. Others are remembered because their original purpose went badly off course. A few were genuinely useful but came with consequences their creators could never have predicted.

Dynamite, plastic bags, leaded gasoline, and even Clippy started with ideas that seemed useful at the time. Some were meant to make work safer, others were created to solve environmental or transportation problems, and a few were based on ideas that seemed perfectly reasonable before their darker consequences became clear.

Here are 18 inventions and ideas that began with promising goals but ended up creating some very serious problems, becoming commercial flops, or simply irritating the people they were supposed to help.

Dynamite: A Safer Way to Handle Blasting

When Alfred Nobel patented dynamite in 1867, he saw it as a safer and more practical way to handle difficult blasting work. Construction crews could use it to clear rock, build tunnels, and make large excavation projects easier than working with less stable explosives.

Dynamite also became closely associated with warfare, something Nobel reportedly found deeply troubling. His fortune later funded the Nobel Prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize.

The invention itself had useful applications, but its ability to cause destruction made it a very different kind of invention than the one Nobel had hoped to create.

The Segway: The Future of Personal Transportation

When the Segway arrived in 2001, it was presented as a new way to get around cities. The two-wheeled vehicle was supposed to change short-distance transportation and become a familiar sight on sidewalks and city streets.

That never quite happened. Segways were expensive, somewhat awkward to use, and subject to restrictions in many places. They did find a place in guided tours, security work, and other niche uses, but they never became the everyday transportation option many people expected.

The Segway’s story became even more unusual in 2010, when company owner Jimi Heselden died after accidentally driving a Segway over a cliff.

Lead-Based Gasoline: A Solution With a Terrible Cost

In the 1920s, adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline helped reduce engine knocking and allowed engines to run more smoothly. It looked like a clever fix for a major automotive problem.

The health consequences were devastating. Lead exposure can damage the brain and nervous system, with children being especially vulnerable. Decades of leaded gasoline use contributed to widespread environmental contamination and human exposure.

The United States finally banned leaded gasoline for on-road vehicles in 1996. By then, generations of people had already been exposed to lead from automobile emissions.

The Radium Craze: When a Miracle Substance Became a Health Hazard

During the early 20th century, radium was treated almost like a miracle substance. It appeared in various health products, cosmetics, drinking products, and other consumer goods because people believed its radioactive properties could provide health benefits.

The enthusiasm faded as the dangers became harder to ignore.

The women who became known as the Radium Girls are among the most famous victims. They painted watch dials with radium-based paint and were encouraged to shape their brushes with their lips. Many later developed severe illnesses linked to radiation exposure.

What had once seemed futuristic and exciting became a grim lesson in what can happen when a new substance is widely used before its risks are fully known.

Plastic Bags: Convenient, Cheap, and Difficult to Dispose Of

Plastic shopping bags were promoted in part as an alternative to paper bags because they were lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to produce. Their convenience made them a common part of shopping for decades.

The problem came after the bags were thrown away.

Plastic bags can end up in waterways, oceans, and other natural areas, where they can harm wildlife and persist for many years. Their widespread use has also created a massive waste problem.

The Concorde: An Amazing Plane With a Difficult Business Model

The Concorde was one of the most impressive passenger aircraft ever built. It could travel at more than twice the speed of sound, allowing passengers to cross the Atlantic in a fraction of the time required by conventional aircraft.

The problem was cost.

Tickets were expensive, fuel consumption was high, and the aircraft’s sonic boom limited where it could fly at supersonic speeds. The crash of Air France Flight 4590 in 2000 further damaged public confidence.

The Concorde made its final commercial flight in 2003. It remains a remarkable piece of aviation history, but its high operating costs made long-term commercial use difficult.

Eugenics: A Dangerous Idea Disguised as Science

Eugenics was based on the belief that society could improve humanity by encouraging certain people to reproduce while preventing others from doing so.

The hoverboard craze exploded in 2015. These self-balancing scooters were marketed as a fun new way to get around, and they quickly became popular gifts.

Then reports of batteries overheating and catching fire began piling up.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission eventually issued warnings and recalls involving hundreds of thousands of hoverboards. Airlines also restricted them because of concerns about lithium-ion battery fires.

For a gadget that was supposed to make getting around more fun, catching fire was certainly not part of the plan.

Nuclear energy can produce large amounts of electricity without the carbon emissions associated with burning fossil fuels. That has made nuclear power an important source of electricity in many countries.

The technology also carries risks that became painfully clear after major accidents.

The 1986 Chornobyl disaster released radioactive material across large areas, while the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident followed a massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Nuclear power remains an important source of electricity around the world. Its history shows that a technology can provide enormous benefits while still requiring strict safety measures and careful planning.

Clippy: The Office Helper Everyone Loved to Hate

Clippy, officially known as the Microsoft Office Assistant, was introduced in the 1990s to help people use Microsoft Office.

The animated paperclip would pop up with suggestions such as asking whether the user needed help writing a letter. The idea was friendly enough, but many people found the interruptions annoying.

Clippy was eventually removed from Microsoft Office, but the character became a lasting piece of computer nostalgia.

Years later, Clippy is still referenced in jokes, memes, and online discussions about annoying software. For a virtual assistant meant to be helpful, becoming a symbol of unwanted assistance is a pretty funny ending.

These inventions all tell different stories. Some caused serious harm, some simply failed to live up to their promises, and others became famous for reasons their creators never expected.

That may be one of the most interesting things about invention: creating something is only the beginning. Once a new product, chemical, machine, or idea enters the real world, people find uses for it that its creators may never have considered. Sometimes that leads to progress. Other times, it creates a problem that takes decades to fix.
