A lot of the things we use every day have stories that are far more interesting than we might expect. Some were created after a lucky accident, while others came from someone noticing a small problem and wondering if there was a better way to solve it.

From a spring that seemed to walk across the floor to a candy bar that melted in a scientist’s pocket, these inventions came from some pretty unexpected moments. Here are 15 everyday products with origins that might surprise you.

The Slinky Started With a Falling Spring

The Slinky began with a spring that wasn’t supposed to become a toy.

In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was working on springs that could help protect sensitive equipment aboard ships. One of the springs accidentally fell from a shelf and started moving across the floor in a strange, stepping motion.

James became curious about what he had seen and began experimenting with the spring as a possible toy. His wife, Betty, came up with the name Slinky.

The toy was introduced in 1945 and quickly became a favorite with both kids and adults. Watching one slowly make its way down a staircase is still oddly entertaining, more than 80 years later.

The Microwave Oven Came From a Melted Candy Bar

One of the most useful kitchen appliances of the 20th century came from an unexpected snack-related discovery.

In 1945, engineer Percy Spencer was working with magnetrons, the vacuum tubes used in radar equipment. During an experiment, he noticed that a candy bar in his pocket had melted.

Instead of brushing it off as a strange coincidence, Spencer investigated further. He tested the effect on other foods and discovered that microwaves could heat food.

His experiments eventually led to the development of the microwave oven, giving households a much faster way to heat and cook food.

Post-it Notes Started With an Adhesive That Didn’t Work as Planned

In the late 1960s, 3M chemist Spencer Silver was trying to develop a strong adhesive. Instead, he created one that was weak enough to stick to surfaces but could also be removed without leaving much residue.

At first, it wasn’t clear what the adhesive was good for.

Years later, another 3M employee, Art Fry, came up with a practical use for it. He wanted a bookmark that would stay in place without damaging the pages of his hymn book.

That idea eventually led to Post-it Notes. What began as an adhesive that didn’t meet its original goal became one of the most recognizable office supplies around.

X-Rays Let Doctors See Inside the Body

In 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was experimenting with cathode-ray tubes when he noticed something unusual. A fluorescent screen nearby was glowing even though the tube was covered.

Röntgen began investigating the mysterious rays and discovered that they could pass through certain materials, including human tissue.

He later produced an image of his wife’s hand, showing her bones and wedding ring. The discovery gave doctors a way to look inside the body without surgery and changed medical diagnosis forever.

Super Glue Was Almost Tossed Aside

Super glue also has an unexpected history.

In 1951, chemist Harry Coover was working on materials that could be used for heat-resistant equipment during the development of jet aircraft. One of the substances he tested turned out to be extremely sticky.

At first, the material wasn’t what his team was looking for, and it was set aside. Coover later realized that the adhesive had another useful purpose.

That material eventually became cyanoacrylate adhesive, better known as super glue. Today, it’s a go-to option for quick household repairs and small fixes.

Velcro Was Inspired by Burrs

A walk through the outdoors gave Swiss engineer George de Mestral the idea for Velcro.

After returning from a hike, de Mestral noticed tiny burrs clinging to his clothes and his dog’s fur. Rather than simply pulling them off and forgetting about them, he examined the burrs under a microscope.

He discovered that the burrs had tiny hooks that caught onto loops in fabric and hair. That observation inspired him to create a fastening system based on the same idea.

The result was Velcro, which is now used on everything from shoes and bags to medical equipment and aircraft.

Corn Flakes Came From an Accidental Kitchen Mishap

The story of Corn Flakes began with wheat that was left sitting out longer than planned.

In the late 19th century, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Keith Kellogg were experimenting with grains and food preparation. During one experiment, boiled wheat was left sitting out and became stale.

Instead of throwing it away, they continued experimenting with the grain. Their work eventually led to the development of flakes, and later to the corn-based cereal that became Corn Flakes.

A kitchen mistake ended up becoming a breakfast staple.

Popsicles Began With a Child’s Experiment

The Popsicle has one of those stories that sounds like something a child might try on a whim.

In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson mixed soda powder and water with a stirring stick and accidentally left it outside overnight. Temperatures dropped, freezing the mixture around the stick.

Epperson didn’t do much with his frozen treat at first. Years later, he began selling it as a frozen dessert and eventually patented it.

The Popsicle went on to become a familiar summer treat, all because a drink was forgotten outside on a cold night.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Came From a Simple Substitution

Chocolate chip cookies were created because Ruth Wakefield didn’t have the type of chocolate she originally planned to use.

In 1930, Wakefield was baking cookies at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. She had run out of the baker’s chocolate she normally used, so she chopped up a semi-sweet chocolate bar and mixed the pieces into the dough.

She expected the chocolate to melt throughout the cookies. Instead, the pieces softened while keeping much of their shape.

The result became the chocolate chip cookie, one of the most familiar homemade treats around. Today, it’s hard to think of a cookie jar without picturing those little pieces of chocolate.

Potato Chips May Have Started With an Annoyed Customer

The story of the potato chip is often traced back to chef George Crum in 1853.

According to the popular story, a customer complained that Crum’s French fries were too thick. In response, Crum sliced the potatoes extremely thin, fried them until crisp, and served them to the customer.

Rather than complaining again, the customer reportedly loved them.

Whether every detail of the story is accurate is still debated, but Crum and other cooks of the period played a role in the development of thin, crispy fried potato slices. The snack eventually became a staple at grocery stores, parties, and sporting events.

Matches Came From an Accidental Chemical Reaction

In 1826, English pharmacist John Walker was experimenting with chemical mixtures when he noticed that a dried mixture on the end of a stick could ignite when scraped.

The discovery gave him the idea for a convenient way to start a fire. Walker began producing friction matches, giving people a much easier alternative to older fire-starting methods.

The basic idea was simple: strike the match against a rough surface, and it ignites. That little stick has been a household staple for generations.

Safety Glass Was Born From a Broken Flask

French chemist Édouard Bénédictus discovered an important clue about safety glass after accidentally dropping a glass flask in 1903.

The flask cracked, but it didn’t shatter into pieces. Bénédictus learned that the flask had contained a coating of cellulose nitrate, which had helped hold the broken glass together.

The discovery eventually contributed to the development of laminated safety glass. This type of glass became especially useful for automobile windshields, where keeping broken glass from flying apart can make a major difference during an accident.

The Pacemaker Came From Using the Wrong Part

The development of the implantable pacemaker began with an accidental mistake by engineer Wilson Greatbatch.

In 1956, Greatbatch was building a device that could record heart rhythms. He reached for a component but accidentally installed the wrong resistor. Instead of simply recording a steady signal, the device produced electrical pulses.

Those pulses reminded Greatbatch of the electrical signals involved in controlling a heartbeat. He continued working on the idea and eventually developed a device that could help regulate an abnormal heart rhythm.

His work helped lay the groundwork for the implantable pacemakers used in medicine today.

Sunglasses Started Out as More Than Sun Protection

People have been placing tinted materials in front of their eyes for centuries.

In 12th-century China, judges are believed to have used flat pieces of smoky quartz to obscure their facial expressions during court proceedings. These early tinted lenses weren’t being used in the same way as modern sunglasses, but they show that people had already found reasons to place dark material over their eyes.

Modern sunglasses later became associated with outdoor activities, eye protection, fashion, and Hollywood style. By the 20th century, they had become a familiar accessory rather than a rare curiosity.

The Bendable Straw Solved a Simple Problem

The bendable drinking straw came from a father trying to make life a little easier for his daughter.

In 1937, Joseph Friedman watched his daughter struggle to drink from a straight paper straw at a restaurant. He came up with a way to make the straw bend without breaking.

Friedman inserted a screw into the straw and wrapped dental floss around it, creating grooves that allowed the straw to bend. He later patented the design.

The flexible straw made it easier for people to drink without having to tilt their heads or hold the glass at an awkward angle. A small change to an ordinary object turned out to be useful for all kinds of people, including hospital patients and children.
