Mold needs moisture, warmth, and a place to grow. A small change, such as blocking airflow or covering a damp surface too soon, can give it the conditions it needs. Some DIY fixes may look harmless while quietly making moisture problems worse.

Sealing Windows With the Wrong Materials

Trying to stop drafts with plastic or another material that doesn’t allow moisture to escape can create condensation around windows. That moisture can collect on the frame, sill, or nearby wall and eventually encourage mold.

Weather stripping made for windows is a better choice for reducing drafts. Check the area around the window from time to time, especially if you notice condensation or dampness.

Applying Too Much Caulk in Wet Areas

A fresh line of caulk around a bathtub or sink can give a bathroom a clean finish, but piling on too much can create problems. Water can become trapped beneath cracked or poorly applied caulk, where it can sit unnoticed.

Remove damaged caulk, let the area dry completely, and apply a smooth, even bead of bathroom-grade waterproof caulk.
