13 Kitchen Appliances That Aren’t Worth Their Price Tag

If you’ve ever been lost to the maze of an appliance store or scrolled through glittering kitchen gadget ads, you know the allure of the ‘must have’ gear that seem like the game changer for your cooking. Plenty of manufacturers know how to sell a dream—gleaming chrome finishes, or sleek designs, or the ultimate convenience.
However, not all that glitters should be found in your kitchen. Too many appliances become dust catchers instead of life savers. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of these pricey products that rarely live up to the hype.
Bread Makers
Warm, fresh bread at the touch of a button sound like a baker’s dream. Large footprint and high price tag, along with the availability of cheap fresh options from the bakery make them a questionable investment for most households. If you aren’t baking multiple loaves a week, you probably want to find something better to use that counter space for.
Juicers
Promising health and vitality, juicers come with a high price tag and a cleaning process to make a monk impatient. Whole fruits and vegetables contain more fiber and nutrients than their juiced versions, says Mayo Clinic. If you’re not committed to juicing every day, your $200 juicer will become a glorified paperweight.
Waffle Makers
Waffles are a favorite of everyone, aren’t they? Not really enough to warrant having a waffle maker that takes up space and costs so much. It’s been broken out a handful of times before the user realizes pancakes work perfectly fine. Unless you are feeding a waffle loving army weekly, a waffle maker is an expensive dust magnet.
Baker’s Stand Mixer
Stand mixers are gorgeous and powerful, but if you’re not whipping up bread dough or cakes on a weekly basis, most jobs can be done by a hand mixer for a fraction of the cost. And these bulky machines take up a lot of countertop real estate, which would be better served by more everyday essentials.
High-End Espresso Machines
A home espresso machine sounds like a coffee lover’s paradise until you look at the price. With high end models running well into the thousands, you could enjoy years of café coffee for the same price. On top of that, mastering that barista level brew takes time and patience, something that doesn’t lend itself to the need for a quick caffeine fix.
Electric Egg Cookers
Electric egg cookers are trying to reinvent the wheel on one of the simplest tasks in the kitchen: boiling eggs. A pot of water and a stove is fine for most people. Just save your money and use a timer instead.
Specialty Pizza Ovens
It’s all promised: Artisanal, restaurant quality pizza in your home, but at a hefty price point with single use functionality, these countertop pizza ovens are an impractical purchase. You don’t need a dedicated appliance to get great results; a regular oven or even a cast iron skillet will do the trick.
Smart Refrigerators
Text me when I’m out of milk? Sure, it’s impressive. Despite price tags often being double or triple traditional models, smart refrigerators are still a tech novelty, rather than a necessity. These features rarely hold long term value for everyday users and are risky to your privacy, according to Consumer Reports.
Automatic Potato Peelers
No one’s thrilled to peel potatoes, but paying $50 or more for a device to do it for you seems a bit much. Many people prefer a simple peeler, it’s faster and easier to clean.
Electric Can Openers
Electric can openers sound convenient, but they’re usually bulky, overpriced and tend to break. This job can be done just as well by a high quality manual can opener which takes up less space and doesn’t require a power outlet.
Popcorn Makers
Cheap, easy, and only seconds to make, microwave popcorn is the way to go. But why waste money on a popcorn machine takes up space on your counter? Unless you’re having regular movie night, this appliance is more of a showpiece than a necessity.
Sous Vide Machines for Beginners
If you’re a casual cook, sous vide cooking sounds fancy and chef approved, but the learning curve and investment may not be worth it. With traditional methods, most people can achieve delicious results without waiting hours for water baths to work their magic.
Specialty Ice Cream Makers
Creating ice cream at home is fun, but it’s not something we do all that often. Not only are the store bought tubs often cheaper, but the cost of ingredients and the space these machines take and the cleanup after makes homemade a fairly close second.
