If you’re looking for a place where imagination runs free and storybooks spring to life, let me tell you about an amazing place we recently fell in love with—Children’s Fairyland in Oakland, California.
We first visited on a whim, hoping to entertain our two little girls, ages three and four. One visit was all it took—we were hooked. We ended up becoming members, and now it’s our go-to spot week after week.
If you’re a parent of little ones and you’re constantly searching for something for them to do, this whimsical 10-acre park might just become your new favorite place, too.

About Children’s Fairyland
Nestled right along the edge of Lake Merritt in the heart of Oakland, Children’s Fairyland is a vintage storybook theme park designed especially for children ages 0 to 8.
Since 1950, it’s been sparking joy and curiosity in the little ones with colorful storybook sets, hands-on play areas, puppet shows, live performances, and gentle rides perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.

With nearly 60 charming sets inspired by beloved nursery rhymes and fairytales, this place is truly a wonderland. It’s not flashy or overly commercial—in fact, San Francisco Magazine once described it as “as miniature and uncynical as a toddler’s beating heart.” That quote says it all.

Our Experience as a Young Family
From the moment we walked through the gates, our girls were intrigued. They raced through the winding paths, climbed into tiny castles, and peeked through colorful playhouses.
One of the sweetest moments was watching them giggle through a puppet show—clever, funny, and refreshingly not “Disneyfied.” (Fun fact: Fairyland actually predates Disneyland!)

The staff were kind and welcoming, whether they were helping us aboard the mini train or guiding us to the next show. We even bought the magical keys that unlock storytime boxes around the park, which made our visit feel like an interactive treasure hunt.
The carousel ride was another big hit. It was so much fun for the little ones.

Have Coffee and Lunch, Too
We always take advantage of lunch from Fairyland’s on-site café. Since we’re members, we received 15% off our meal—just one of the perks that really adds up over time.
Honestly, the membership pays for itself in just two visits, especially if you’re local and love exploring with your little ones.

What Makes It Special
What sets Fairyland apart is its deep commitment to children’s joy and imagination. It’s not about overstimulation or long lines—it’s about wonder, play, and discovery. The park also supports the community, offering affordable admission and sponsoring visits for thousands of low-income children each year.
Memberships come with a host of benefits including unlimited admission, discounts, access to special events, and more. And if you time your visit right, you can experience themed events during the holidays, like Halloween trick-or-treating or festive Christmas lights.

Children’s Fairyland is more than a park—it’s a place where childhood memories are made. Our daughters talk about it nonstop, and every time we leave, they ask when we’ll go back.

Whether it’s their first puppet show, riding the train, or seeing their favorite nursery rhymes come to life, there’s something timeless and heartwarming about it all.

So if you’re in the Bay Area and have little ones, go ahead and plan your visit. Take it from us—there’s magic waiting just beyond those storybook gates.
