I thought I knew Oakland pretty well—until I discovered the Morcom Rose Garden. I visited for the first time with my kids, and honestly? We were all stunned. I couldn’t believe a garden this breathtaking had been hiding in plain sight.
Tucked away just off Grand Avenue, right in the middle of the city, this quiet, beautiful place felt like a bit of an escape from the everyday.
The kids immediately took off down the winding paths, giggling and pointing out every pink, white, and red rose they could find. Hundreds of blooms, each one more beautiful than the last.
I let them wander (within eyesight, of course) while I found a bench near the reflecting pool and just sat for a bit. The sun was warm, the flowers were blooming, and for a few minutes, everything felt still.

More Than Just Roses
The Morcom Rose Garden has been around for nearly 90 years, and you can tell a lot of care has gone into keeping it special. It was started in the 1930s as a city project and built with help from early New Deal programs. The garden was designed with inspiration from Italian-style gardens, which shows in the curved stairways, stone terraces, and layout that invites you to explore.
Roses surround a small amphitheater, and above it, a wedding terrace that people often use for ceremonies. Apparently, it’s also a popular spot for weddings, vow renewals, and long walks with no particular destination. Who knew?

Great for a Walk or a Moment of Peace
One of the nicest parts of the garden is that it’s set in a natural bowl, which makes it feel a bit tucked away. It’s peaceful, even when a few families are walking around. We saw people sitting with books, a couple taking engagement photos, and neighbors just out for a stroll.
You can easily spend an hour or two here—walking the paths, watching birds, or just sitting by the pool while the roses do their thing. It’s not a big park, but it’s definitely one worth visiting.

Every little corner felt magical. Whether we were walking through the shady upper paths or peeking at birds fluttering through the trees, the garden offered a new surprise around every turn.

The Reflecting Pool
One of the most peaceful spots is the reflecting pool in the middle of the garden. Surrounded by rose beds and overlooked by a Mediterranean-style loggia, it invites you to slow down. I sat on a nearby bench while the kids played and just… breathed.
It’s hard to explain, but there’s something incredibly grounding about being surrounded by so much beauty and history.

Community Love Keeps It Blooming
I found out later that a lot of the work to care for the roses is done by local volunteers. They call themselves the “Dedicated Deadheaders” (which made me smile).
Many of them are trained “Dedicated Deadheaders” who help prune, plant, and preserve it. Their efforts keep the roses blooming and the community thriving.
They meet regularly to help maintain the garden. You can tell it’s a labor of love.
