Idle Awhile, Negril: The Boutique Hotel That Keeps Me Coming Back

I’ve been going to Negril for years, but somehow, I only just discovered Idle Awhile, and now I can’t imagine staying anywhere else. From the moment we arrived, the staff set the tone for our whole trip. Every single person we met was warm, friendly, and genuinely happy to help.

We were handed a welcome sheet that listed everything we had access to, along with a refillable Idle Awhile water bottle that we ended up using constantly. Around the property, there are water stations, some with fresh fruit-infused flavors like watermelon.

Idle Awhile was the perfect escape we needed.

Steps from the Beach

The hotel is right on Seven Mile Beach, which honestly feels like a little slice of heaven. Soft, white sand, calm, clear water, and a location that makes it easy to walk the shoreline and explore other resorts, beach bars, and restaurants.

Our room was just steps from the beach, yet still quiet and private. It was clean, comfortable, and had that breezy, minimalist, island feel I love.

There are plenty of cushioned beach loungers, and the whole place feels relaxed. If you’re feeling active, you can grab a kayak, paddleboard, or even take out a Hobie Cat sailboat—all included with your stay. The lifeguards keep an eye on things and are happy to offer tips if you’re new to water sports.

Food and Drinks

Idle Awhile has just one restaurant—Chill Awhile—but it’s right on the beach and a great place to start your day. We had the traditional Jamaican breakfast every morning: ackee and saltfish, callaloo, fried bammy, yam, plantains, and festival (fried dumplings).

Lunch and dinner feature international dishes with Caribbean influences. If you’re craving more local flavors, there are plenty of spots within walking distance.

The drinks were just what you want at the beach—simple, refreshing, and not overpriced. Service is relaxed; you won’t have waiters coming up to your beach chair, but the bar is only steps away.

The Vibe and Rooms

Idle Awhile is a small property, with only 16 rooms and suites, so it never feels crowded. The style is laid-back and bohemian, featuring large windows, verandas with hammocks or lounge chairs, and an abundance of lush greenery. It’s peaceful enough for couples but friendly and safe enough for solo travelers. Kids will also love it.

One of my favorite parts was Marley, the hotel’s spunky resident cat, whom we found lounging on veranda chairs in the mornings and wandering the gardens as if he owned the place.

The whole atmosphere here is friendly and unpretentious—guests smile and say hello, kids play freely on the sand, and you never feel rushed to be anywhere.
