Just two hours from Panama City, this small mountain town sits inside an extinct volcanic crater and offers a slower pace, cooler temperatures, and endless opportunities to get outside. It was the perfect place to start our trip through Panama, knowing things would be calm, relaxed, and easy with the children.
The town itself is compact and walkable, mostly concentrated along a short stretch of the main road with restaurants, shops, markets, and small side streets. Add in wildlife, waterfalls, and family-friendly hikes, and El Valle becomes an ideal destination for families.

Explore El Chorro Macho Waterfall & Swimming Pool
Chorro Macho is one of the easiest and most accessible nature stops for families. For a $3 entry fee, you can walk a very short trail, about 200 meters, to a lookout point over the waterfall.
It is ideal for younger kids or anyone short on time. There is also a man-made swimming pool nearby for an additional fee, which can be nice on warmer days.
Visit the Butterfly Haven
The Butterfly Haven is a calm, colorful place where kids can see butterflies up close in a peaceful setting. It is an easy stop near town and a great way to start easing into El Valle’s slower pace.
Meet Rare Golden Frogs at EVACC
El Valle de Antón is the native home of the rana dorada, or golden frog, which is now extinct in the wild due to a deadly fungus. At the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center Foundation, kids can learn about conservation efforts and see frogs up close in captivity. It is educational without being overwhelming and a meaningful experience for all ages.
Hike the Frog Sanctuary Trail
In addition to the frog exhibits, the Frog Sanctuary offers an easy 40-minute hike that works well for kids. The trail winds through bamboo and forest, featuring interesting plants and wildlife along the way.
Walk the Square Trees Trail
The Arboles Cuadrados, or Square Trees, trail is a short forest hike where kids can spot trees with square trunks. The trail has a $4 fee and is also known for possible sightings of frogs, birds, and occasionally sloths.

The El Nispero Zoo focuses on native and rescued animals. We saw monkeys, jaguars, sloths, deer, toucans, parrots, owls, crocodiles, turtles, and snakes. It is small enough to explore in one to two hours, making it manageable with kids.
Play in a Creek After the Rain
After afternoon rain showers, small creeks around town fill with fresh water. We found one near our hotel where the kids played and splashed for a long time. Sometimes the simplest moments end up being the most memorable.

Stopping by the market to buy fresh fruit is both affordable and fun for kids. Mango cups were a favorite, and it is a great way to try local produce while taking a break from walking.
Grab Smoothies for a Casual Lunch
El Valle has several small cafes offering smoothies and light meals. These are easy lunch options for kids and usually include outdoor seating where children can stretch their legs. And if you’ve never had a smoothie in Panama, I promise these are quite the treat. These kids will not complain about this sweet treat.
