If your kids love trains — or you’re just looking for something fun, affordable, and outdoorsy to do on the weekend — the Tilden Park Steam Train in Berkeley, CA, is a must-visit. We recently took our two girls and had such a blast, it quickly became one of our favorite weekend adventures.

Tips for Visiting:
Before you visit, here are some things that we found helpful:
- Parking is easy if you get there early, but it can fill up quickly. Overflow parking is available, although you may need to walk a short distance.
- There are restrooms, drinking water, and the area is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
- Bundle Up – Even in the summer, it can get chilly up in the hills. Bring jackets or layers for everyone.
- Combine with Other Tilden Park Favorites – Make a day of it! After your train ride, check out the Tilden Little Farm (free!), Tilden Carousel, or Jewel Lake Nature Trail for a short and scenic walk.
- Snacks & Water – Pack your own picnic and enjoy a bite under the redwoods, or grab a snack at the nearby visitor areas.

What to Expect
We arrived early and were one of the first families there, which we highly recommend. There was almost no wait, and we had our pick of seats. The back of the train offers some of the best views! But we let our kids choose the seats, and we sat somewhere in the middle of the train.

The staff and volunteers are incredibly friendly and clearly love what they do, which makes the experience all the more special. They’re also great with kids, happily answering questions and offering cheerful greetings.
The Tilden Steam Train is a scaled-down, narrow-gauge steam locomotive that runs on a loop through the beautiful Berkeley Hills. It’s the kind of old-fashioned ride that makes everyone — kids and grown-ups alike — grin from ear to ear.
The ride lasts about 14 minutes, which is just the right amount of time for small children to stay engaged without getting squirmy. The train moves at a gentle pace, making it safe for all ages.

Along the route, you’ll roll through redwood groves, over a small bridge, and even through a tunnel — twice! There are also a few small props and features to spot along the way. It’s a scenic and peaceful ride that offers plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” for the younger crowd.
Quick Tip: Stand behind the yellow line while waiting at the depot and have your camera ready when the train comes chugging around the bend!
Why We Loved It
Honestly, we were all smiles the entire time. The classic train whistle, the friendly staff, the beautiful forest backdrop, and the joy on our kids’ faces made for one of those sweet, simple outings that remind you how fun local adventures can be.
At just $4 a ride, it’s one of the best values in the Bay Area for families. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, the Tilden Park Steam Train is a wholesome, memory-making ride worth every penny.
