Vinegar has earned a permanent spot in plenty of cleaning cupboards. It’s inexpensive, easy to find, and works well on many everyday messes. That reputation can make it tempting to reach for the bottle whenever something needs cleaning.
The problem is that vinegar is acidic, and that acidity isn’t a good match for every material in your home. Used on the wrong surface, it can wear away finishes, damage protective coatings, cause discoloration, or leave you with a repair bill that could have been avoided.
“Just as it eats away at coffee stains, imagine it doing the same thing to other surfaces in your home,” says Joe Glajch, a chemist and owner of JLG AP Consulting.
The American Cleaning Institute also warns that using an unsuitable cleaner can shorten the life of household surfaces and appliances. That can add to maintenance and replacement costs over time. U.S. households spent an average of $2,458 on home maintenance and repairs in 2023, so avoiding preventable damage is worth paying attention to.
Global Market Insights reports that the global vinegar market was valued at $10.8 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 4.4% from 2025 through 2034. Vinegar certainly has plenty of household uses, but that doesn’t mean it belongs on every surface.
Here are 15 things you should keep vinegar away from.

Granite and Marble Surfaces
Natural stone countertops can look tough, but their protective finishes need some care. Granite and marble can be damaged by acidic cleaners, including vinegar.
“Vinegar spells trouble for granite countertops (and any other natural stone countertop). The acid in vinegar wears away at the protective sealant that prevents spills from penetrating the stone and causing permanent stains,” says Shifrah Combiths.
Once that protective seal is damaged, liquids can penetrate the stone more easily and leave stains that are difficult to remove.
For everyday cleaning, use a cleaner made for natural stone or one with a neutral pH. A soft microfiber cloth works well for wiping away crumbs, spills, and everyday grime. Natural stone countertops may also need periodic resealing, depending on the material and manufacturer’s recommendations.

Waxed Furniture
Vinegar and waxed wood furniture don’t make a good pair. The acidity can break down the wax finish, leaving the wood underneath less protected from moisture, dust, and scratches.
You might notice the furniture looking dull or uneven after repeated cleaning with vinegar. Once the finish is compromised, restoring it can take considerably more work than simply using the right cleaner from the start.
For routine cleaning, stick with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. If the furniture needs more than dusting, use a wood cleaner that is compatible with its particular finish.
Cast Iron Skillets
Cast iron develops its familiar dark, smooth cooking surface through seasoning, which consists of layers of polymerized oil. Vinegar can strip away some of that seasoning, particularly with prolonged exposure.
The acid can also encourage rust if the pan is left wet.
For routine cleaning, warm water and a stiff brush are usually enough. For stuck-on food, coarse salt can provide some gentle scrubbing action. Dry the skillet thoroughly after washing and rub on a thin layer of cooking oil before storing it.
If a cast-iron pan does need a serious cleaning, there are safer ways to restore the seasoning than repeatedly soaking it in vinegar.

Aluminum Cookware
Aluminum reacts with acidic substances, and vinegar can leave some aluminum cookware looking dull or discolored. Prolonged exposure may also contribute to pitting.
That doesn’t mean aluminum cookware is difficult to maintain. A little warm water, mild dish soap, and a non-abrasive sponge will handle most food residue without putting the metal through unnecessary chemical exposure.
For cookware with a manufacturer’s care guide, follow those instructions rather than relying on a general-purpose cleaning trick.
Knives With High-Carbon Steel Blades
High-carbon steel is prized by cooks and knife enthusiasts because it can take and hold a very sharp edge. It also needs more care than stainless steel.
Vinegar’s acidity can encourage corrosion, discoloration, and pitting on high-carbon steel. Frank Spinelli, head of appliance testing for Consumer Reports, says, “Cleaning knives with vinegar can damage the finish and leave the edge pitted.”
Don’t soak these knives in vinegar or leave acidic food sitting on the blade. After use, wash the knife by hand with warm, soapy water, rinse it, and dry it right away. Keeping the blade dry is one of the easiest ways to reduce the chance of rust.

Natural-Fiber Carpets and Rugs
A vinegar solution that works on a washable synthetic rug can be a poor choice for wool, silk, and other delicate natural fibers.
Acidic cleaners can affect some natural fibers and may contribute to discoloration or weakening. There is also the risk of making a stain worse rather than better.
For a small spill, check the rug manufacturer’s cleaning instructions first. A pH-neutral product made for the particular fiber is usually a safer choice. Blot rather than scrub, since aggressive rubbing can damage delicate fibers.
For an expensive or antique rug, professional cleaning is often the safest option.
Rubber Components
Rubber seals, hoses, and gaskets are easy to overlook during cleaning. They’re also parts you don’t want to damage.
Repeated exposure to vinegar can affect some rubber materials. Grayson warns that continued use may damage hoses and contribute to leaks.
Dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, and other appliances may contain rubber components that aren’t meant to be exposed to acidic cleaners.
Use warm, soapy water where appropriate, or follow the appliance manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. If you’re unsure whether a seal or gasket can handle vinegar, check the care guide before using it.

Egg Stains
Vinegar may seem like a logical choice for cleaning up a raw egg spill, but acidic cleaners can cause the proteins in egg to coagulate. That can leave you with a sticky mess that’s harder to remove.
Instead, use cool or lukewarm water with a little dish soap. Wipe away the residue with a damp cloth and repeat as needed.
For dried-on egg, let the area soften with water before wiping. A gentle cleaning method is much easier than trying to scrape away a hardened mess afterward.
Bleach-Based Cleaning Solutions
This is the most serious warning on the list: never mix vinegar with bleach.
Combining the two can release chlorine gas, which can cause coughing, burning eyes, breathing problems, and serious respiratory injury.
Keep the products separate and follow the instructions on their labels. If you accidentally mix bleach and vinegar, leave the area and get into fresh air rather than trying to clean up the fumes yourself.
Never combine household cleaning chemicals unless the product directions explicitly say the combination is safe.
Hardwood Floors
Vinegar is frequently recommended as a homemade floor cleaner, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe for every hardwood floor.
Repeated exposure to acidic solutions can damage some finishes, leaving floors looking cloudy or dull. Perry Santanachote notes, “Diluted vinegar can dissolve the finish that protects the wood and leave it looking cloudy, dull, or scratched.”
Hardwood flooring varies widely, so check the manufacturer’s recommendations before choosing a cleaner. A product made for finished hardwood is a safer bet than mixing a homemade vinegar solution.
Also avoid soaking wood floors. Excess water can cause problems of its own, including swelling and warping.
Unsealed Grout
Tile may handle vinegar better than grout does. Unsealed grout is porous, which means acidic cleaners can penetrate the material and gradually weaken it.
Repeated vinegar exposure can leave grout more vulnerable to crumbling, staining, and moisture problems.
A grout-specific cleaner is a better choice. For light dirt, a mild baking soda paste and a soft brush can work well. Don’t use excessive force, and rinse away cleaning residue afterward.
Once grout has been cleaned and fully dried, sealing it can help protect the porous material from future stains and moisture.
Pearls
Pearls are beautiful, but they are much softer and more chemically sensitive than many people realize.
“The calcium carbonate in a pearl reacts with the acetic acid in vinegar to produce calcium acetate, water, and carbon dioxide,” notes Prudence Jones of Montclair State University in New Jersey.
That reaction can damage the pearl’s surface and take away its natural luster. Vinegar has no place in a pearl-cleaning routine.
After wearing pearls, gently wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove oils and residue. Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive cloths, and prolonged contact with water. Store pearls separately so they don’t rub against harder jewelry.
Automotive Paint
A bottle of vinegar might be handy for household cleaning, but your car’s paint job isn’t the place to experiment with it.
Automotive paint is protected by several layers, including a clear coat. Acidic substances can damage the finish, especially with repeated or prolonged exposure.
The Universal Technical Institute explains that acidic materials can damage automotive paint and leave the finish vulnerable.
Use a car wash soap formulated for automotive finishes instead. These products are made to remove dirt without unnecessarily attacking the paint or protective layers.
Delicate Fabrics
Silk, rayon, wool, and other delicate fabrics can react poorly to acidic cleaners. Vinegar may weaken some fibers or cause discoloration.
The University of Arizona notes that materials such as silk, rayon, and some wool can be sensitive to acids.
Before treating a stain, check the garment’s care label. A detergent made for delicate fabrics is usually a safer option. If you’re trying a new cleaning product, test it on a hidden area first.
For valuable clothing, vintage pieces, or fabrics with complicated care instructions, professional cleaning may be the better choice.
Digital Screens
Your television, laptop, tablet, and phone screens have delicate coatings that aren’t meant to be treated like countertops or windows.
Vinegar can damage some anti-glare and protective coatings. Repeated exposure may leave streaks, cloudy areas, or other permanent marks.
Antonette Asedillo says, “Vinegar can damage a screen’s anti-glare properties and even make a touchscreen less responsive.”
Instead, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular device. In many cases, a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth is enough for fingerprints and dust. If additional moisture is needed, use only a small amount of an approved screen-cleaning solution.
Never spray cleaner directly onto a screen, and don’t press hard while wiping.
Vinegar has earned its reputation as a useful household cleaner, but it isn’t a universal solution. Its acidity is exactly what makes it useful on some messes and risky on certain materials.
A few minutes spent checking the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions can save you from damaged finishes, stained materials, ruined cookware, or an expensive repair later. Keep the vinegar for surfaces that can safely handle it, and reach for a material-specific cleaner when the label calls for one.
