This homemade playdough recipe couldn’t be simpler! And it’s the perfect activity to do with your kids. I recently made this playdough with my 4-year old, and she had an absolute blast—especially when it came time to add the colors. She loved choosing her favorite shades, which made the whole experience even more special.

Not only did she now have fun playing with the dough, but the process of making it together was the highlight of her day. It’s a great way to bond and create something fun together.

Here’s a guide on how you can make this with your little ones at home.

Here’s What You Will Need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • Food coloring
  • 2 tbsp oil (you can use any kind of oil from canola, vegetable or coconut oil)
  • large pot
  • metal spoon
  • Ziplock Gallon sized bags

How to Make Colored Playdough

Step 1: Add the Dry Ingredients

In a large pot, mix together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.

Step 2: Add the Wet Ingredients

Pour in the water and oil.

Step 3: Cook the Dough

Place the pot over medium heat, stirring continuously. Keep stirring until the dough thickens and starts to form a ball.

Step 4: Cool the Dough

Remove the pot from the heat and transfer the dough to wax paper. Let it cool slightly.

Step 5: Knead the Dough

Once it’s cool enough to handle, knead the dough until it’s smooth.

Step 6: Separate the Dough

Divide the dough into four separate balls. Place each ball into a gallon-sized bag.

Add a generous amount of food coloring, and knead the dough inside the bag to avoid staining your hands. You can start small and add more coloring if you want a brighter color.

Once you have worked the color into the dough, you can remove it from the ziplock and continue to knead it into a shape of your choosing.

Once the color is evenly mixed, your playdough is ready for use!

How to Store the Playdough

We all know that playdough can get hard quickly once it is exposed to air. That said, To keep your playdough soft, store it in the same bag you used or transfer it to a fresh ziplock bag.

This will help maintain its texture and softness. The playdough should stay soft and usable for up to 3-6 months when stored this way.

There you have it! How to make easy homemade playdough. I hope you enjoyed this project and learned something useful in the process.
