Lizards are fascinating creatures that tend to find their way into our houses sometimes to escape the heat, or sometimes to look for insects. These little reptiles are usually harmless, even beneficial by keeping pests under control, but some people prefer to keep them out of sight or just want nothing to do with them. If you’ve ever wondered where lizards hide or if you’re just trying to keep an eye out for them, knowing their favorite spots can come in handy.

However you need to know that lizards are masters of disguise, and will blend into the environment and crawl through the smallest of crevices. If your home is a wonderland of hiding places, then it is for these creatures. Where do these little buggers hide? Well, here are some of the most common, and easy to miss, spots where lizards might be hiding around your house.

You often find lizards hiding in the shadowy space behind large pieces of furniture. Imagine that spot behind your couch that you haven’t dusted since you moved in, or the back of your entertainment unit. These are warm, quiet, uninhabited spots and what you might call a prime lizard spot. If you have these areas, move and clean behind furniture regularly to make them less enticing.

Lizards love to live in your refrigerator, oven, and washing machine. They create dark, warm environments that lizards just can’t help but be attracted to. Plus, a food source is provided by any stray crumbs or insects that gather beneath them. Pulling out appliances and giving them a good cleaning every so often can help discourage lizard visitors.

Inside Houseplants

Indoor plants have dense foliage that provides a safe and natural looking hiding place for lizards. If you’ve seen your fiddle leaf fig or your snake plant move around, well, a lizard might be living in there. Lizards prefer leafy shelters that look like their natural homes, according to a ResearchGate study. When you are watering your plants or moving around your indoor greenery, keep a watch.

Cracks in Walls

The cracks in your walls or baseboards are just the right size for lizards to squeeze their way into. These crevices are like little fortresses in which they stay safe from bigger predators. Sealing cracks in your home isn’t just about taking away hiding places, it also helps with insulation and pest control.

Behind Wall Art

That beautiful gallery wall you’ve put together could also be the hiding spot of a sneaky lizard. A snug and concealed retreat is provided by the space between the wall and a hanging picture. If you hear the faint movement or see a flash of a tail behind your artwork, you could have a lizard.

Another place lizards like to hide is under flat, rarely lifted rugs. If a lizard blunders across the floor and you can’t see where it went, look under your carpets and mats. It’s not the most common place to find one, but it’s amazing how often people find a lizard hiding in these spots.

In Shoes or Boots

Lizards are attracted to those cardboard boxes filled with holiday decorations or forgotten trinkets in your attic or basement. The spaces remain untouched for long periods, and provide safe haven for lizards. If you can organize and declutter these areas, then you can deter them.
