13 Things to Never Keep at Home

Living spaces should feel welcoming, should they not? However, certain things can disrupt that comfort. Just think about it: have you entered someone’s house and, within the first five minutes, felt uncomfortable? Perhaps it is not just bad taste in decorating that is at work here!

There are those days when you come home, and things just feel a little off; you wouldn’t believe how some things can change that. Below are 13 items you should not allow in your home if you want to maintain a harmonized, safe, and happy home.

Expired Medications

Old medications may appear to be inoffensive, but they are toxic. Drugs also wear out, so they might not perform the desired function—or even worse, produce some side effects. Rather than have those half-empty bottles lying around, dispose of them through a local pharmacy or a drop-off center.

Old Newspapers and Magazines

Old Magazines and Newspapers

Everyone has that one corner in the house where books, magazines, newspapers, clothes, or any other item of use are piled up because ‘one day’ we will get around to reading those magazines/newspapers, doing something with those clothes, or using that item. But, in all honesty, they are just ornaments. Apart from being a fire hazard, old papers are inhabited by pests. And let’s face it, will you ever sit and read that National Geographic of 2005 again?

Excessive Clutter

Clutter is not just physical; it scrambles your brain as well. According to Verywellmind, decluttering your home can positively affect your mental state. Clutter also interferes with the calming of one’s nerves, and in extreme cases, it may lead to an increase in anxiety. The idea of eliminating anything that does not cause a person “joy” might not be too far off from the truth. A cluttered space does not necessarily point to a cluttered mind, but a clearer space helps your mind.

Electrical Gadgets That May Not Be of Any Use

Old and discarded appliances can be space-consuming and can consume power. It’s like they’re constantly occupying a part of the mind even when they are not connected to an outlet. And I haven’t even mentioned the fact that some of these old cars are fire hazards in the making. If you haven’t used that dusty old toaster oven since the last millennium, it is time to let it go.

Broken Items

People like to repair things because they have certain appeal, but in certain circumstances, it is better to let go. Furniture, electronics, or kitchenware that is damaged or has been partially dismantled can pose a threat to people’s safety. If you are not planning on correcting the situation anytime soon where that chair is getting wobbly, then it might be fair that the two of you go your separate ways.

Anything With a Bad Memory

Don’t you ever wonder how some things in your environment make you feel uncomfortable or remind you of something bad? These objects are things you received from an ex or an item that reminds you of a low phase in your life, and even though they may not physically do anything to you, they steadily suck the life out of you. If it does not feel good to you then you should consider donating or throwing it away. It is not worth living life with negative energy around you.

Weapons

Unless you are a fan of the ‘caveman’ style furniture and accessories (and who isn’t?), it is wise not to have weapons such as guns, or even the samurai sword you bought on impulse. It is important not to have such items at home because they are likely to cause an accident occasionally. Also, they are not safe, they can be accessed by children, visitors or even a very clumsy you.

Excessive Cleaning Products

Yes, of course, tidiness is essential; however, having dozens of chemicals beneath your sink is not safe. Not only are some of these chemicals hazardous, but some also react dangerously with certain other chemicals, which may cause explosions. A better strategy than the one proposed above is not to allow oneself to get carried away with too many things but to stick to only the necessary ones. Look at natural cleaning products as they do not harm your home and the environment as other products do.

Plants You Can’t Keep Alive

Plants help to breathe life into a home—literally. But neglected, dying plants can have the opposite effect. It is best to just let go of plants that are beyond your capability. Wilting or withered plants can create a gloomy and untidy atmosphere in your house. If possible, choose plants that require minimum care, such as succulents, or use artificial plants if you do not like real plants.

Expired Food

I bet many of you have a lot of food in your pantry that has gone bad and has been there for years. Not only is it dangerous to consume food items that have gone bad, but it’s also just a bunch of trash taking up space in your kitchen. Take time and clear your cupboards and get rid of any food items that have gone bad. It will be good for your stomach as well as the space where you store your food.

Sentimental but Useless Junk

Objects of sentimentality – the nemesis of clean and minimalistic spaces. We all have memories and souvenirs that bring back a special moment or a person, but sometimes we have too much of it. Perhaps it’s time to scale down on the number of sentimental items that you keep around the house. You do not have to keep all ticket stubs of every concert you have attended in your lifetime.

Old Cosmetics

Cosmetics don’t last forever. According to Medparkhospital, after cosmetics expire, they can lead to skin issues such as irritation or even an infection. In addition, the old make up products can be unhygienic since bacteria are likely to grow on it. Throw away any lipstick, lip gloss, blush or eyeshadow that has passed its expiry date and make way for these makeup products that actually work!

Valuables Without a Safe Place

Whether it is money or other valuables such as jewelry or documents, it is unwise to leave them where everyone may get access to them. If you are forced to keep them at your home, then it is advisable to buy a good safe. This makes it difficult for the things in the store to be stolen or lost through some other cause. Investing in proper storage will save you a lot of worry down the line.
