The Buyers Thought the Deal Was Done Until the Sellers Took Something That Was Supposed to Stay

The final walkthrough gives homebuyers one last chance to check the property before signing the closing papers. For one couple, that visit revealed an unexpected change just hours before they were supposed to get the keys.

They were scheduled to close that afternoon when they noticed the front door looked different. The beautiful colonial brass rim lock they had admired was gone, replaced by a cheap aluminum door handle.

The sellers hadn’t said a word about removing it.

The original brass lock was gone

The buyers said the sellers had removed the brass lock, patched the holes it left behind, and installed a cheaper replacement. They hadn’t discussed anything with them beforehand.

When the buyers’ real estate agent questioned the sellers, they claimed the original lock had stopped working, and they had thrown it away. The buyers weren’t convinced, especially since six siblings were selling the property and they said they’d already been difficult to deal with.

With closing only hours away, the couple now had to decide whether to accept the replacement or delay the sale over the missing hardware.

Reddit told them to take another look around

Many commenters felt the buyers had good reason to question what happened. If the sellers removed and replaced the front-door lock without telling them, people wondered whether they might have changed other items in the house too.

Some shared similar experiences with sellers who removed light fixtures and switch plates and even replaced expensive appliances with cheaper models before closing. Several advised the couple to inspect the entire house again before signing the final paperwork.

Others suggested asking the sellers to return the original lock or provide a credit large enough to buy and install a comparable one. For buyers who had already fallen in love with the home’s original details, a cheap replacement wasn’t an acceptable substitute.

The sellers’ agent finally stepped in

The disagreement didn’t delay the sale. In an update, the buyer said the sellers kept claiming the original lock was broken, but their agent eventually stepped in to settle the matter.

The agent reportedly offered $500 from her own commission to resolve the dispute and keep the closing on schedule. The buyers accepted the purchase and went ahead with the sale.

They later explained that their frustration wasn’t really about the lock itself. They were upset that something they expected to stay with the house was removed without anyone discussing it with them.

Would you have delayed closing over it?

A door lock may seem like a minor detail compared with the cost of buying a house, but original hardware can be part of what makes an older property special. Finding it gone just hours before closing would leave plenty of buyers wondering what else might have been removed.

Would you have accepted the $500 and gone ahead with closing, or refused to sign until the original brass lock was returned?
