16 Fashion Trends Millennials Should Leave Behind

Millennials are often credited with being trendsetters, but let’s face it: Not every trend has aged gracefully. I mean, we’d rather not get back on the wild rollercoaster ride that some fashion choices of the 2000s and 2010s are, as we’ve gotten a little wiser (and hopefully better taste) as the years go by.
But this isn’t about poking fun at old habits because fashion is a moving target and we all miss the mark sometimes. If you’re ready for a stroll down memory lane of a good natured variety, let’s unpack some trends that deserve a gentle nudge into retirement.
Low-Rise Jeans
Let’s get the elephant out of the room. There was a time for low rise jeans, but forcing them to stay up while sitting, bending, or breathing is certainly not missed. And remember, we live in the era of high waisted everything where the comfort and style can co exist. They are also flattering, forgiving and don’t involve acrobatics to put on.
Excessive Logo Mania
Do you remember when your outfit could also be a billboard? Oversized logos were once a badge of honor, now it’s try hard. It is no longer cool to be overly obvious, and minimalist branding is the new cool. Let your outfit say it all by being the best it can be not by being loud.
Cold Shoulder Tops
Cold shoulder tops were innovative at one point, but somehow they became more awkward than chic. The odd peek-a-boo shoulders merely give you warmth and style. If you’re after playful cuts, try off the shoulder or asymmetrical designs.
Tiny Sunglasses
Tiny sunglasses were fun; if you wanted to look like a futuristic movie character. Unfortunately, they rarely flatter most face shapes, and don’t even block out the sun. Oversized frames are back with better sun protection and a touch of retro glamour.
Velour Tracksuits
Velour tracksuit… the look many people are familiar with. We loved it because Paris Hilton wore it. Now, however, head to toe velour is more “stuck in the past” than “Y2K chic.” Replace it for the cozy loungewear sets that are both current and comfy.
Statement Belts
The era when belts cinched over dresses, sweaters and even coats has come and gone. The trend was never about body shape, it was about forcing a silhouette. You don’t need additional embellishments to look polished in a well fitted outfit.
Distressed Everything
In the case of jeans, shirts and sneakers, young people once associated distressing with being edgy. Now, rips and tears are excessive and just look messy. A little wear and tear is fine, but let’s leave the “I wrestled a lawnmower” look in the past.
Feathered Accessories
Bags, earrings and even shoes had feathers for a minute, but they are not exactly timeless. Instead of feathered extras, think about materials that will provide texture without the shedding everywhere.
Peplum Tops
Many people felt fancy in the peplum craze, but it wasn’t always forgiving. This flouncy detail often flattered midsections the wrong way. Streamlined tops and blouses have been doing the trick now, as they don’t add any unnecessary volume.
Chunky Statement Necklaces
Once, chunky necklaces were all the rage, but they’ve lost their sparkle. Typically these oversized pieces would never really enhance your outfit, it would just overpower it. Now delicate chains and sublte jewelry are a go to for an effortlessly chic look.
Knee-High Gladiator Sandals
These sandals were bold, lacing them up took forever, and they weren’t exactly practical. For any occasion, slides or ankle boots feel far more wearable and stylish.
High-Low Hemlines
The high-low hemline trend rarely appeared avant garde and more often mismatched. The trend of having a thousand things hanging off you now feels like an outdated experiment in fashion when nowadays balanced silhouettes and clean lines dominate the fashion scene.
Oversized Plaid Shirts
Plaid shirts tied around the waist screamed Grunge revival , but not every revival ages well. A polished nod to this classic pattern calls for a well fitted flannel shirt or modern shacket (shirt jacket hybrids).
Infinity Scarves
Once, infinity scarves were a bulk add to an outfit with little functionality. Today, lightweight scarves or scarves with big patterns will still give you style without enveloping your body, so throw those infinity scarves out of your wardrobes. Less is more!
Skinny Jeans
Fun in theory, tricky in practice: that is what skinny jeans are. Pairing them wasn’t easy without looking like Johnny Bravo and if it was in a colour other than than blue or black, it was even worse. Pants in neutral or earth tones have a certain way of tying up an outfit without much effort.
Extreme Platform Sneakers
Spice Girls or not, platform sneakers were a gamble to walk in. Luckily, sleek sneakers that strike a balance between style and comfort are beginning to rightly earn their place on shoe racks.
