15 Shade-Loving Plants You’ll Want in Every Room

Don’t worry if your home doesn’t get much natural sunlight — there are still plenty of ways you can bring a little bit of greenery into your home. Low light thriving plants are some that just need a little light (not too much!) to thrive and will be perfect for those dim corners and shaded rooms.
If you don’t have a lot of light throughout the day, these shade loving plants are perfect for a little bright spot in your space. Let’s look at a few that will thrive beautifully, even in the shadows.
Chinese Evergreen
Chinese evergreen is a showstopper because of its variegation and patterning which makes these leaves stand out so much. Luckily, this plant thrives on low light, infrequent watering, which is great for a first time gardener. Spider Plant This plant is useful in many ways for the air in your home like reducing many common toxins in everyday household cleaners. The Chinese evergreen is an excellent choice for any room but the Chinese evergreen is ideal for entryways or hallways where natural light is limited and some color is needed.
Boston Fern
If your bathroom receives plenty of sunlight, and you’d like to bring some greenery into your kitchen, the Boston fern is just the ticket. And if you don’t have room for it, because it can go anywhere near some indirect light. Feathery lush green fronds are what the plant will become there, and they will look elegant and stylish. This plant can be quite large at maturity with proper care and it can fill an empty spot in some corner or on a shelf in one’s bathroom.
Prayer Plant
This is a good idea for people wanting to bring some color and texture to their indoor jungle. One thing about the red veins and spots on its fleshy green, oversized leaves are characteristic to the plant that are eye catching. Low light and lots of humidity? The prayer plant will love the bathroom or put it over the sink in the kitchen. At night its leaves close and are open during the day time; if you put it in your bedroom you can in fact watch a nighttime performance.
Dracaena
Growth with tall, slender stems and bright foliage makes dracaena the perfect addition to any room. Not only does it have air purifying abilities but it survives in low light conditions. However, its architectural form is that of a dramatic statement piece for living rooms or home offices. There is a wide range of dracaenas, from small, potted desk plants to large floor specimens.
Ivy
And here’s a classic shade plan that has a little charm and nostalgia to it for your room. In most cases the trailing vines are trained on a shelf or leave to trail from a hanging basket. This is a fairly easy plant, resistant to neglect, and grows well in low light (hallways and even bedrooms). Some streaks of softness appear in the cool toned indoor decor, the ivy’s delicate heart shaped leaves are delicate.
African Violet
The African violet is worth a try if you’d like to have color in your shade loving plants. It has large blunt fuzzy leaves and nice large violet blooms you can keep in indirect light to water once or twice weekly. The plant also draws certain toxins out of the surrounding air.
Chinese Money Plant
If you are looking for a low-maintenance house plant that has ‘wow’ factor, the Chinese money plant is for you — with its unusual coin-shaped leaves it will certainly catch the eye. In medium to bright light (but not direct sun) it is quite happy but will probably appreciate a bit more watering as it has less access to light. It is perfect for modern busy people without green thumbs — put it near the window and water it every two weeks — and the good luck and prosperity attracts anyone.
Spider Plant
A favorite is the spider plant, its arching leaves are recognizable and it is quite adaptable. Because of its ribbon like leaves, it makes a perfect hanging basket, and as an added bonus, it is great in both bright and low light areas making it versatile for just about any room. The spider plant is also known for its air purifying quality, removing toxins like formaldehyde. This hardy plant is easy to propagate with its offshoots and excellent for beginners and more experienced plant owners.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
The recent most popular greenery for the Instagram-worthy boho styled interiors is a fiddle leaf fig not only, it becomes more than that very quickly. Although it is a relatively simple plant to take care of its violin shaped leaves, it is also still quite beautiful for having at least some bit of a green thumb. When given the choice, it will prefer slightly higher light exposure; however, it can tolerate slightly lower light exposure than it prefers best. Make sure you are relatively careful watering it, though, since its roots always hate being wet. Any spacious living room or office looks great with a fiddle leaf fig.
Cast Iron Plant
The cast iron plant is true to its name, truly as hardy as you can get. It has long, deep green leaves which will bring a bit of the tropics into your home. It withstands low light and irregular watering, so it’s perfect for a busy home. One of those very low maintenance plants and suitable for those looking for a plant that can withstand neglect and add a soothing natural vibe to your setting. A cast iron plant can turn a dreary, dark corner into a comfortable place.
Philodendron
Of all indoor plants, philodendron has become a classic favored for its full foliage and its hardiness in low light. Philodendrons come in climbing and non-climbing varieties, and will provide depth and greenery for your living spaces.
