15 Items You Should Purge from Your Bathroom Right Now

The bathroom can quickly turn into a mini warehouse of half used products, expired items and curious collection of unnecessary gadgets. Even though you think it’s going to be a big task, decluttering your bathroom can turn what is a cramped, chaotic corner into a clean, serene retreat. And besides, it’s not like you’re doing anyone any favors by holding onto that dusty bottle of old perfume or that razor with two shaves left.
Here is a list of bathroom items that are just occupying space and possibly hiding things you actually need and use. It’s time to say goodbye to some of these things.
Expired Skincare Products
Like food, skincare products have expiration dates, and it’s not harmful to use them past the date, but it’s a waste of time and space. Skincare products that have expired can no longer be effective, so that serum or cream that once promised glowing skin is now just taking up space.
Empty or Nearly Empty Bottles
If you’re saving that last squirt of shampoo or lotion, it’s time to say goodbye. We forget they’re even there and leave the nearly empty bottles for months (or years). Use up what’s left if you can and recycle the containers. You’ll be amazed how much space you clear up.
Unused Hair Tools
How many curling irons or straighteners do you own? How many do you actually use? There are a few hair tools you’re hanging onto that you rarely use, it’s time to let them go. That bulky blow dryer from ten years ago may be taking up precious space for no good reason.
Old Razors
If you have any disposable razors around with more rust than blade, it’s time to let them go. It is possible to cause nicks and cuts on your skin using an old razor. Using a fresh blade feels so much better, let’s be real. Get rid of any old, dull or rusty razors and treat yourself to a new one.
Sample-Size Toiletries
As you collect tiny bottles of shampoo, lotions and perfumes from hotels and beauty boxes, how often do you use them? If you have a cabinet full of travel sized items you never use, donate what you can, or recycle what you can. Clearing out these small items frees up space for the products you actually use every day.
Half-Used Bars of Soap
We switch soap brands before the bar is used up, and before we know it, we have a soap collection that we will never actually use. If you’ve got bits and pieces of bars piling up, you might want to repurpose them to make a soap scrub or just toss them out.
Outdated Medications
Old prescriptions, vitamins and over the counter meds often end up in bathroom cabinets. Look at expiration dates and toss anything that’s gone bad. If you have expired meds, most pharmacies have safe medication disposal programs to let go of them responsibly.
Unused Bath Products
If you don’t take a soak often, these items are just clutter: from bath bombs to bubble baths. Instead of hoarding bath products that you might use for a one time spa night, use them up in the next month or give them away to friends. Getting rid of what you don’t use frees up space for what you do.
Duplicate Items
Have you got three tubes of toothpaste because you always forget to check before buying more? Go through your items and group duplicates, deciding which items you can use up and which you can throw out. If you’re organized, you’re less likely to have multiple backups.
Old Toothbrushes
We know toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, but many people have those old ones around ‘just in case.’ Instead of letting them crowd up your storage space, put them to good use for cleaning tiny crevices and then toss them. After all, a new toothbrush means fresher breath and better dental health.
Old Towels
Eventually, towels get scratchy or lose their softness. If you have some towels you’re holding onto for “emergencies” but you haven’t used them in years, it’s time to let them go. Animal shelters will take old towels and put them to good use.
Outdated Fragrances
If you have perfume bottles that don’t smell quite the way they used to, it’s time to throw them away – they’ve gone off. Old perfumes can smell stale or even sour and won’t have the same appeal. Discard what you don’t love, and keep what you love.
Old Makeup
Even if makeup still looks fine on the outside, it doesn’t last forever. Old makeup goes bad with bacteria, especially products that touch your eyes and skin—such as mascara or foundation. If your eyeshadow is from the early 2000s or your mascara from last summer, it’s time to toss it. Expired makeup can also cause irritation, so clearing out old cosmetics is actually good for the skin.
Broken Jewelry or Accessories
If you have a drawer of single earrings, tarnished bracelets, or broken hair accessories in your bathroom drawer, it’s time to clear them out. If you’re not going to repair them soon, they’re just taking up space and making it harder to find the pieces you actually wear.
Outdated Cleaning Supplies
If you have a stash of almost empty cleaning sprays and scrubs that you never use, finish them or toss them. Freeing up that space can make your cleaning routine quicker and easier, and old or expired cleaning supplies don’t work as well.
