13 Items That Don’t Belong in Your Closet and Why

Creating an organized closet is like crafting a well-composed symphony: yet every piece must have its place and the overall harmony must match your sense of style, and your needs. However, whilst it’s easy for clutter to creep in, before you know it, your closet becomes more of a mess than it is a calm. If you are tired of going through the chaos of items, it’s time you focus closely on what you are assembling.
There are some things that are too sentimental or too stylish to belong in your closet, even if you really want them to. Doing this works wonders to clear them out and you’ll be able to regain your closet as a serene place and have easier time to find what you need. It’s time to grab a garbage bag, roll up your sleeves and get to work on removing the following items from your closet that are just squatting there!
Outdated Fashion Trends
Bell Bottom jeans that you swore would make a comeback? If they’re not making a comeback on the racks in your wardrobe after several seasons, it’s time to raze them. Keeping outdated trends that clutter your closet makes it hard to know what you really wear. Fashion is like a rollercoaster, up and down, yesterday’s what isn’t today. Don’t carry yesterday’s trends with you!
Clothes That No Longer Fit
This is a tough one, there’s nothing worse that hanging onto clothes you don’t wear—like keeping a boat that‘s too small for the lake that you love. If your favourite pair of jeans is a bad memory now (and not a reality), it may be time to say auf wiedersehen. This will eventually result in a wardrobe full of frustration and regret whenever you can’t find an item. Love the size you’re in today and let these pieces make room to celebrate the great you!
Mismatched Socks
Isn’t that our one lonely sock that just can’t seem to find its partner? If you’ve been saving them for that one day when they magically reunite, it’s time to let them go. The mismatched ones only cause confusion. Now toss them out and save some floor space for the socks that will actually keep your feet cozy!
Seasonal Items Out of Season
If your winter coat is still taking space in your closet when the sun is blazing, it’s time to switch to summer. Which only further adds to the chaos if you have out of season clothing laying around. When spring comes, pack away your winter gear and replace it with easier to wear layers. In other words, it’s like giving your closet a seasonal wardrobe refresh!
Worn-Out Shoes
Every shoe has a story, but should yours be the horror story or the fairy tale, yours might need to rest. Worn down lost shape shoes not only take up valuable space but can also injure your feet if you try to fit them back on again. Whether it’s scuffed up sneakers or heels that saw better days, say farewell to footwear that is more of a hindrance than a help.
Unworn Gifts
You actually have that sweater Aunt Mildred knitted you three birthdays ago? The thought is the thing but something sitting there gathering dust isn’t doing anyone any good. If you haven’t wore it by now you can pretty much say it is not your style. Throw these unappreciated presents in the re-gift, donate, or sell pile. Give that sweater away to someone else who will love and wear it.
Old Workout Gear
Do your workout clothes sit untouched as you binge watch another television show season? If the dust on those leggings has more left in it than the stretch, then it has to go. Only keep the pieces of motivation that get you to the gym. Your closet should not bring back day-after day memories of workouts that almost happened!
Clothes You’ve Never Worn
Did you get that dress with the price tags still on it on sale for a steal? It’s really tempting to keep an item because you got it on a steal but if you haven’t worn it, you won’t. So don’t stuff these clothes in the closet and never wear them, they belong out in the world going fabulous. Pass them to someone who will wear them!
Sentimental Items
That concert t-shirt from when you remember the night like it was just yesterday. That had a memory attached. We all have things that were just with us when we bought them and memories that came with them. A closet full of memories can be overwhelming, but while it’s good to keep a few keepsakes, there is a line you don’t want to cross. Make a few of your most meaningful items especially true to yourself. Don’t go crazy with nostalgia, though, and let it consume your wardrobe.
Repetitive Basics
Yes, we all have to have basics in our lives, but if you’ve got a closet full of basic tees, it’s time to do a cleanse. Keeping multiple versions of the same item can get confused and messy. Select a few favorites that work well and can be mixed and matched easily and then the duplicates can find a new home.
Outdated Loungewear
If your lounge wear are items that you wore to college or have definitely passed their best by date, it’s time for some refresh. The key is comfort, but design doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t have to, sacrifice style. Say goodbye to the holey stuff and instead treat yourself to these cozy yet chic pieces that will help you feel good chilling at home.
Unused Costumes
We all have a costume somewhere in the back of our closets whether it was for a Halloween party or even an unintentional theme night. If you haven’t worn it in the last year (or three), it’s time to side with the Gods. Sure, it’s fun to dress up, but your closet is not a costume closet. Find space to pack clothing you’ll be reaching for much more!
Unused Accessories
Finally, those statement necklaces that haven’t been seen since the last big event can make a hike. If you have accessories that aren’t being used, and you can’t remember the last time you wore them —then they’re just using up valuable real estate. Throw into the donation box the rest of the pieces that give you no joy and keep the ones that bring you joy.
