Magic can be made of winter vacations. Whether you’re in a snowy wonderland in a cozy mountain town or escaping to a tropical paradise to catch some sunshine, these trips are the perfect way to recharge while it’s still cold. The idea of a winter vacation is idyllic, but the execution can often be a let down if you’re not careful.

Overpacking for the wrong kind of weather, or missing all the hidden gems of your destination are just a few of the common mistakes you can make on your winter holidays. Hopefully these pitfalls won’t transform your much anticipated trip into a frosty fiasco. So, here are some of the most common missteps, and how you can avoid them.

Skipping Weather Research

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is that they think weather in the winter is the same everywhere. Obviously not all snowy destinations are created equal: fluffy powder in Aspen versus icy drizzle on London. Make sure to take time to check detailed weather forecasts for your location and bring what is needed. In some places, a lightweight rain jacket might be more useful than a bulky parka.

Packing Everything but the Kitchen Sink

As bulky as winter wardrobes are, it doesn’t mean you have to bring the complete contents of your closet. Not only does it weigh you down, it can cost you a lot of money in airline fees. Choose wardrobe items that are versatile and layering friendly and won’t eat up your suitcase space. After all, your best friend in flight delays or lost luggage is a well packed carry on.

Neglecting Your Skin

Your skin is exposed to cold air and indoor heating which can be very drying and cause irritation, itchiness. To forget a good moisturizer and lip balm is practically an invitation to winter woes to tag along on your trip. Dermatologists say using a hydrating product with ceramides can help to lock in moisture and protect from harsh elements. And don’t forget the sunscreen, yes, it’s winter too! Sunburns are a sneaky threat, because snow reflects UV rays.

Overlooking Local Experiences

Go to tourist hotspots sure, but don’t skip the local flavor! What travelers often miss are community driven events, quaint cafes, and quiet hiking trails because they’re so focused on Instagram famous attractions. Just walk down that side street, and you may well end up in the coziest little coffee shop, or an art gallery you fall in love with.

Flying at the Wrong Time

If there is one thing you should know about booking flights, it’s that timing is everything. CheapAir.com’s study discovered that the best time to book winter flights is 67 days in advance. If you wait too long, you may end up with sky high prices. Spontaneous trips are fun, until you realize you’re paying for them during peak travel season.

Ignoring the Importance of Footwear

Cold, wet feet are a real downer on a day of sightseeing. Of course, flip flops are ideal when you’re heading to the beach but aren’t ideal for a winter trip to the city or mountains. Choose thin and waterproof, insulated boots or shoes with good traction around the heel and the front of the shoe. Bonus: This means that you’ll save yourself from any embarrassing slip and fall moments on icy sidewalks.

Forgetting Travel Insurance

Most of us don’t like to consider worst case scenarios, but travel in winter can bring its own hiccups — a flight cancellation due to a snow storm, or illness. Peace of mind and financial protection for expensive ski passes, or international flights, are what travel insurance provides. It’s a small investment today that will save you from major headaches later.

Food is part of vacation adventure! Don’t fall for the temptation of eating only at chain restaurants or missing meals to save time. Ask the locals where you should eat or check reviews and hunt for a hidden gem. After all, it wouldn’t be a trip to France without fondue and a visit to Vermont without maple syrup treats.

Rest Is Undervalued

With all the excitement, it’s always tempting to fill up your schedule to the gills. Vacations are also about relaxing, though. Just because you take a holiday doesn’t mean burnout does. Decide when you want to be off plan, whether that’s lounging in your cabin, a spa day or reading by the fire. You’ll thank your future self.

Winter traditions around the world vary greatly, and not adhering to local etiquette can be rude, at best, and at worst, put you in hot water. For example, in Japan, one must rinse before going into an onsen (hot spring), and follow other rules. Doing a little research can go a long way towards respectful travel.

Overusing Your Phone

When you’re on vacation, you’re supposed to be making memories, not just capturing them. If you’re on screen all the time, you’re missing the magic happening around you. Put aside some tech free moments to really connect with your destination, companions and even with yourself. I promise you, it’s better without a screen to where you’re seeing it.
