11 Snakes That Could Stretch Across Your Fire Pit

Sitting around a fire pit inspires thoughts of warmth, camaraderie, maybe a couple ghost stories? Imagine, though, that your fire pit isn’t just a place to throw back beers with friends, but a makeshift ruler to check out some of nature’s longest, slithering creatures. Yes, snakes! These reptiles range in all sorts of lengths, and some would stretch from one side of your fire pit to the other and even some farther.

Before you start looking under your patio furniture for them, however, the snakes we’re about to discuss aren’t the sort that will show up unannounced at your next marshmallow roast. Some of these reptiles come from all over the globe, and their length would make even the largest fire pit seem small. Here we go!

Reticulated Python

When it comes to length, the reticulated python is the heavyweight champion of the snake world. These are the longest snakes in the world, and can reach 23 feet or even larger. They’re native to Southeast Asia and live in rainforests, grasslands, and sometimes even villages, where they sometimes have run ins with humans. Although they are non venomous, they are not to be sniffed at — they can kill prey as large as a deer. This snake could circle your standard six foot diameter fire pit almost four times!

Green Anaconda

The green anaconda slithers right into the conversation of talking about snake girth and power. A little shorter than the reticulated python, the South American giants can reach around 20 feet long, but make up for it in girth. They are found lurking in swamps and rivers, and are close to water. Despite their size, attacks on humans are rare. Next to this swamp dwelling powerhouse your fire pit would appear like a hula hoop.

Burmese Python

The Burmese python is another massive reptile that could make your fire pit look like a small child’s thing. This Asian native, which averages about 16 feet but has potential to grow to more than 20 feet in captivity, is known for its calm temperament — unless it’s on the hunt. Unfortunately, they’ve become invasive species outcompeting local wildlife in places like Florida. This snake is big enough to easily drape itself across your pit and then some.

King Cobra

In parts of Asia, the king cobra is not only the longest venomous snake, but also a snake with a bit of cultural reverence. These sleek reptiles can grow to 18 feet long and are as intelligent as they are formidable. They are mostly snake eaters and are famous for their menacing hood. Picture this: if your fire pit had been a playground for a king cobra, it would have stretched across and still had tail to spare.

African Rock Python

The African rock python makes for some pretty big headlines, for its strength and its immense ability to gulp down large prey. These snakes are native to sub-Saharan Africa and may range in length from 16 feet, though there are some notable specimens over 20 feet long. They are an intimidating sight, thick and muscular bodies. If you stretched out next to your fire pit, you’d quickly know who owns the backyard.

Amethystine Python

The amethystine python is an Australian and Papua New Guinean python that is as colorful as it is big. With shimmering scales that reflect a rainbow of colors, this snake can grow to up to 16 feet or more. They are agile as climbers and hunters, and most likely hunt birds and small mammals. Their shimmering scales would set the stage around your fire pit, if you’re brave enough to stay.

Yellow Anaconda

While the yellow anaconda may be the smaller cousin of the green anaconda, don’t let that fool you. At up to 14 feet, this South American snake still has impressive length. It likes marshes, and is a solitary predator that waits very quietly for its prey. It won’t outstretch some of the other contenders, but it could easily stretch over your fire pit with a little left over for the impressive coils.

Indian Python

The Indian python, which is a bit smaller but no less majestic, is often confused with Burmese cousin. These snakes reach lengths of about 12 to 15 feet; and are docile in captivity. They’re expert ambush hunters in the wild. An Indian python stretched out beside your fire pit is a sight you wouldn’t want to miss.

Boa Constrictor

Hollywood’s ultimate snake is the boa constrictor, which has starred in movies and myths. These snakes are usually no more than 13 feet, and these may be small compared to some of the giants listed above, but are still very impressive. Boas are strong and stealthy predators and are found natively to Central and South America. You wouldn’t want a fire pit encounter with a boa, it would feel like having a coiled up guest who might just be there for dinner—literally.

Coastal Carpet Python

Another sleek, bigger candidate is the coastal carpet python of Australia, capable of stretching up to 13 feet in length. These snakes tend to be found in urban areas, sneaking into sheds and roofs to get at prey. Though they aren’t venomous, their bite is powerful. A coastal carpet python around your fire pit would be more than capable of stealing the spotlight from your s’mores.

Black Mamba

The black mamba may be known more for its speed and venom than its length, but it deserves a mention. This African snake can grow to lengths of about 14 feet, and is both feared and respected. Known for striking with incredible speed, it’s one of the deadliest snakes on Earth. While you wouldn’t want this slithery speedster anywhere near your fire pit, it would definitely outsize it.
