10 Things You Should Never Put in the Washing Machine

Modern life is so much more convenient, especially compared to the past, when taking care of your whites meant going down by the river with a washboard before it got dark. But now we can throw them in the washing machine. Knowing what not to put in the washing machine is vital to protecting your appliance and preserving different materials and items.

Improper use of washing machines may put several things at risk, from delicate fabrics to electrical appliances. This is critical for avoiding anything costly or harmful to your clothes, accessories, and machine. Avoiding these common mistakes can help ensure your things last longer and keep your washing machine running smoothly for years.

Delicate Fabrics

Add delicate fabrics such as silk or lace to the pile of items never to go in the machine. This agitation and spinning can rip or tear these textiles, ruining their beautiful, intricate designs. Wash by hand or in a lingerie mesh laundry bag.

Suede and Leather

If you put anything made out of suede or leather in the washing machine, it will be destroyed by water damage. Water can make them shrink, soften, or lose material. Always clean using their respective cleaning methods to keep them as good as new.

Embellished Clothing

Clothing with sequins, beads, or other embellishments will quickly lose its decoration in the washing machine. This strong action can shake loose or break these accessories. The first and gentlest way to protect your bejeweled apparel is Hand washing.

Shoes that we think are sturdy enough for the washing machine — well, any heat and tumbling will break down sneaker adhesives(used in midsoles!) and shape. Perhaps consider giving them a spot-clean or hand-wash every so often to help keep your shoes in top condition and wear-free.

Cashmere and Wool

Cashmere and wool will shrink and become distorted if they are machine-washed. The fine threads are not built for physical exertion and water of differing degrees. Hand washing or dry cleaning would be best for these warm, luxurious fabrics.

Swimwear

The rough cycle of the washing machine can destroy swimwear, loosening elastics and fading colors. Hand wash swimwear to help it keep its shape and color, and never use laundry detergent or bleach on the fabric.

Electric Blankets

Placing electric blankets in the washing machine can be dangerous, as it may damage the wiring. You have to be sure that your disposable blanket is not wet (steamed and built-in heating circuits do not like dampness) and that nothing will short out due to water ingress. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for spot cleaning or further attention.

Hats and Caps

The spinning and tumbling of a washing machine can cause hats and caps to lose shape and structure. To help the hats last, spot-clean or wash them using an appropriately designed hat-washing frame is also a good idea.

Pet Beds

Many pet beds have washing specifications that are too strong for a regular household machine. Moreover, their huge size and weight make it possible to unbalance the machine. It is best to follow care labels or get help from the manufacturer on how to clean appropriately.

Memory Foam

Machine-washing memory foam may destroy the supportive nature of this unique material if it soaks up too much water. This can destroy the foam and cause permanent damage. Just wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent for endless use.
